Exactly that, so many folk don't seem to get itPeople sometimes ask me why I make or repair stuff I can buy off the shelf. My reply is "because I like to".

If it was for my own projects then yes but when it's for someone else then unfortunately time is money when you also do if for a businessExactly that, so many folk don't seem to get it
I totally get the whole doing something for fun and enjoyment, I've done it many times in my life and still do it on a regular basis. Just two days a go I swapped some tyres on a Discovery 3 for someone, they were wet and muddy and I'd just come off a 12hr nightshift and I charged £25. I certainly didn't do that for the money. I do it for the joy of using my own kit and knowing I do a better job than most tyre places.Exactly that, so many folk don't seem to get it
Ok, I see where your coming from, fair enough. Thing is this isn't an emergency repair or anything like that, original fault was the clutch was sticking a bit and was a bit snatchy, usable but could be better. In this senario my view is you have something useful in bits when the right part to maybe get it running again is £108 and I didn't think that was a huge amount of money. I assume that shaft could have also had some sort of hardening process. That is the sort thing if it was for some tractors could be a £4-500 part.

Pulled engine and box and found the rear crank seal had let go and gunked up the clutch. Now, bare minimum is replace seal and clutch.
It is now near as damn it a nut and bolt restoration as it's what I like doing, engine in bits, gearbox next, then drive axle etc. Totally pointless from an outside perspective as I'm not even planning on keeping this thing I just like machines and fixing them, I now have three diggers and two dumpers.... This is just a hobby, although I could start a small plant hire business, need to stop buying stuff
