spool guns for lincoln weld pak welders

I have just put a magnum 100sg spool gun on to my weld pak 175. Lincoln said it can't be done.Yes it can be done.You need a 15 volt 1.5 amp power supply to start. Then build a 1.5 to 13.8 variable control into a small utility box.Its easy with a lm217 chip. You also need the mate to the amp connector on the spool gun,it can be ordered at any electronic supplyer.You can do this with no modes to the spool gun or welder. Next you need a dpst small relay.This fires the welder and the wire feed motor in the spool gun.let me know if anyone needs more info.

I have a Lincoln SP100 & would like to know more about your set-up of the spool gun 100s. I'm having issues with upgrading to the 140 or 180 just to make use of a spool gun. Would you have detail drawiings & photos that I could check out?

Also if you think about it the models similar to this welder that are plug and play with the spool gun . Are likely using the same drive motors at 25 volts. The said drive motor would be actuated by a relay. Meaning not likely to back feed or upset a circuit by toggling it to the spool gun with impedance issues. Makes since to me!

mig welder SP 175 plus the drive motor voltage his 20 volts d.c i had to repair the electronic card on my unit and got the voltage and a wire diagram from lincoln from the State, a large resistor was burnt to the dirve motor.

if you have install the 100 sg spool gun with electrical harness switch & plug that came from lincoln with no modification, is it working properly ?
please let me know.

SP-175T Spool Gun Mod, My Version

After discovering this thread I poked around in my welder and came up with this mod that plugs in and uses the built-in motor drive. I ordered a 100SG and installed it. The only thing you have to do to the welder is remove one of the trigger feedthroughs from the sheet that separates the wirefeed from the electronics. Save the feedthrough in case you ever want to keep the spoolgun and sell the welder. I modified the original 100L gun by replacing the 1/4 in spade lugs with one of the 5 pin connectors in the drawing. I chose the 5 pin connectors in the drawing because they were readily available to me but any 5 or 6 pin connector sets that carry a few amps will work. The attached pictures show the wiring diagram, before and after Molex connection and the installed wiring and connectors.

voltage to the spool gun

Hi I opened up my SP175 Plus and the circuitry is a little different. I cut the posative lead to the drive motor and ran two wires out of the cabinet. I also taped into the drive motor negative wire and ran a third wire out. The voltage from the circuit board drive motor lead to the negative lead is between 1.8 and 9.8 volts DC depending on the adjustment of the wire feed pot. This voltage seems low to power the Sg100. Has anyone ,measured the voltage feeding the spool drive motor? I'm afarid to connect a $200 gun and burn out the spool gun or my circuit board on the welder.

Hi, I need to build a power supply for the Sg 100 spool gun. Anyone have any more information on building it other than the schematic posted? Anyone successful in building it? I really need to get this thing done. The teflon liner rig is torture.

I measured the voltage to the drive motor on the SP175 Plus and it ranges from 1.8 to 9.8 vDC

I like your diagram and your set up but why did you go to pin 8 for power and not pin 1 which powers the feed motor on the machine?

Pin 2 is the positive variable voltage to the drive motor and pin 8 in the negative (gnd) to the motor. I do not recall what pin 1 is but it is simply fed through the back to back Molex connectors and has nothing to do with the wire feed.

Hi all. I have a Lincoln weldenpower I just got running. I bought it for junk price, cleaned the carb. and used it to power most of the house in storm Sandy.After cleaning up the Rheostat,It lays an incredible bead down with stick in +d/c or any setting. The machine has CV AND CC setting. From what I'm thinking, I can set the machine to CV mode and control the voltage with the rheostat? Sound correct? Does the trigger on a spool gun control wire feed speed? Or do I need a wire driver? There is lots of space under the cover. The machine is MIG and TIG capable according to the manual I downloaded,but has no provisions for either. All I really need to know is what voltage drives the spool gun we're talking about? I intend to get an independant power supply to drive the wire. If d/c I'll use the engie battery. If A/C I'll use a generator recepticle connection. I don't care if the wire is always hot when the machine is on. So a relay won't be in my plans right now (not that it's a bad idea). The rehostat fine voltage control is super sensitive in stick mode.
I welcome your comments very much, as I know little about spool guns. I e-mailed Mell, I hope he is ok, but think I got some very useful info from everybody else also. So, even the voltage requirement would be very helpfull. I'll report back as I go. And share anything I figure out on my own. I'm glad I found you guys. Yes, I'm a bit of a nutty professor....lol. Mechanic/electrician by trade. Motorcycle junkie and powder coater by night.

MIG is 16 to 25V DC (for 30 to 200A or so.) That would use the constant voltage setting.

Gas MIG is torch positive; gasless MIG is torch negtive.

Most spool guns would use a variable DC voltage to run the motor. Would be 2 to 12VDC or maybe up to 18V.

The trigger on the spool gun would turn on the power and the variable voltage source for the wire feed motor.. You can use a riding mower 12V starter solenoid to control the weld power. Might not last a real long time but they are under $10 at auto parts stores.

If you can find an old MIG welder with a dead transformer cheap, you could use the gun and wire feed out of that.

Hey guys. Found this thread when looking for info on converting a lincoln weld pak to use the 100SG spool gun. I have a 155 with gas and need to weld some thin alu plate and tube so guess I will try to figure this out. Really don't want to get another welder. It looks like the welding voltage/current is ok the question is the variable drive motor voltage. Just so you know there are two types of speed control. One is to vary the voltage like in the above schematic and the other is to use a Pulse Modulated voltage to control speed which the control board may supply. You cannot read PM voltage with a voltmeter. It may show 8v on the meter when the source is actually 20v. It is just switching off and on so fast that the average voltage is only 8v. I am going to check out my 155 and get some measurements on the drive voltage. If anyone is still interested in converting a weld pak I will post my findings. If anyone has been using their conversion for some time and running the spool gun motor directly off the welder's wire feed motor voltage I would like to hear about it since I don't have access to a Pro Mig setup with 100SG to measure the motor voltage. I am way better at electronics than welding. Hope I can figure this out.

Just a follow up. When I went out to the shop and looked around I realized it was the 110v PM 135 I would be converting and not the weld pak. Checked the feed motor voltage out and sure enough it is pulse modulated voltage 13v peaking to 15v switching at ~22,000 times per second or 22khz. Therefore you should either use a switch and send this to the spool gun or else buy a variable PWM power supply and use it. Like in the other drawings it looks like the trigger wires can be just jumped across the ones in the machine. Will post how it works once I get it modified.
