I have painted most of both of my cars with the FLG 5, 1.8 and 1.4 guns, having never painted anything before so they must be OK for a total novice. Although don't expect a perfect job the first time you pick up the gun. I've had to do plenty flatting and polishing and run removal along the way.

The main problem I have had is inconstant levels of orange peel, sometimes zero and sometimes bad but fixable. I think its down to the ambient temperature, the warmer the better. Also painting the entire car in a single session would be good if you have the space. Mine have all been done piecemeal.

I find the critical think is to get the colour base coat on flat. Primers and clear can all be flatted back to a smooth surface easily. However, sanding base coat is a problem especially if its metallic. Fortunately I seem to have reached that level where I am getting the colour base coat on flat. As has been said already temperature is important.

And if someone could let me know a rough quanity I need of each for an mgb. I'd be grateful , too much is better than too little and I've other things to spray with left overs

Ferrari’s grey Grigio titanio metallic outside .

And Ferrari red Rosso Scuderia inside the cabin , under bonnet and thru to the boot

Need to find a Ferrari dark colour I like for a racing stripe .....

I just mix by volume and just use the 600ml plastic measuring cups off of eBay. Get a box of tongue depressors as stirrers. Mixing is nothing to worry about, only bit is working out the thinners so it sprays nice but that's just experience.

Cleaning the gun just run thinners through it, take the cup and cap off, wash everything, put back together and spray some thinners through again and that's it.

Gun setup I do full fan and 2 1/2 turns from closed for the fluid control. Then just set your gun pressure so it's not too high and loads of paint in the air. The fan should be a hand span high and consistent from top to bottom when a hand span away from what you are spraying. Try and keep the gun a hand span away when spraying.

I'm not very experienced but that is how I do it and once you find a happy setup stick with it.

Got my eye on a used FGL 5 for sub 60 quid for finish and lacquer , Decided I want one of those if the spray gun gods smile (the gun will out talent me for sure lol ) .

Have a cheapanese suction gun that cost a tenner I was going to use for primer on the flat it back theory but if I use the PPS system 1 gun does all .

When it comes to joltun applying underneath I can treat the cheapanese suction as disposable and use it for that .

Used guns can be false economy....they do wear out but you can't really see it....a new FLG5 is only £100 on eBay

Think I paid about that but with two tips so can spray primer and top coat with the one gun was the idea.

How do you know a genuine one from fake ?

I bought an FLG5 off eBay.Was very happy so bought another from a different seller.This one had a rough casting with grinding marks visible.Apart from that it was identical to the 1st, packaging was the same too.
I sent photos to the seller and he agreed it wasn't acceptable and would check his other stock.The replacement he sent was much better,like the 1st.
Was it a fake or had it been a rogue genuine item ? I'll never know.
All you can do is buy from a company that specialises in bodyshop supplies rather than a seller of everything and look at the finish off the components ....and the packaging/instructions ......even then you can never be 100% sure..
Counterfeits of all kinds of products can be indistinguishable from the real thing to the untrained eye

My FLG5 is a lovely finished gun so as you say if it’s rough it may be a fake. If you put it side by side with a GTI lite for example you would bet the FLG5 is the expensive gun. It’s the best gun I’ve used and found it easy to setup.

As I mentioned in another post, get yourself a cheap Fastmover touch up gun, fantastic wee gun too and would have no problem painting a panel with it for example.

Another vote for the FL series guns ,I am no paintist but do oddsnsodds when my paint guy cant fit a job in. I have found it easier to have a large and small gun, puts a lot less on in tight spots and eliminates runs I normally run around all edges,shuts and returns at least three times with a small cheap gun . Only after all the tricky bits are well covered do I use the bigger guns, all are gravity feed with the exception of the one with the pot for big stuff.



Dinky one with a pot that swivels for upside down stuff, both of the small ones below are about a tenner.
