Spraying Jotamastic 80

Second coat went on tonight but before I did the painting I had a bit more of a play with the gun settings and the second coat went on better.

Gave the rear suspension parts a rub down (I had painted them previously) and a prime so everything is ready for a top coat tomorrow. The Jotamastic can go on nice and thick and doesn't seem to run so we'll see how I get on tomorrow with the topcoat and how it goes on in comparison. It is fun and satisfying making (some of the) parts which are 47 years old look almost like new again.

Started the top coat tonight, using Jotun Hardtop XP 5L. Seemed to go okay apart from a couple of runs on the big trailing arms due to trying to get the paint inside the channel parts. All things going to plan I'll finish them all tomorrow after work.

Thanks, quite happy how it's turning out. Will be finishing off the paving and extend the carport soon so it's more enclosed which should make it better for spraying.

For next time (painting the underneath of the floor) is it possible to get the three layers of epoxy down one after the other in one go? ie. thin coat, let dry for 5 - 10min, another thin coat etc until I get the equivalent of three good coats down? I did that for the topcoat but spread it over two days, would I be able to just do it in one go as well by just applying thin coats and let them flash off between coats?

I'm also looking into getting my own air fed mask set-up. My current compressor can't run the spray gun and mask so my idea is to get another 3hp 14 to 15 cfm compressor, tee both into one line and run the gun and mask off of this supply. Could anyone recommend a good budget mask, filtration and hose set-up?

Yes, no problem. It's normal prodecure. 3 coats is fine, you don't want paint too thick or it can crack and chip easily. Allow at least 15 minutes flash time though.

No I'd wait for an hour at least. Reduces chance of reactions and solvent buildup.

Cheers thanks. Although just realised I'm being a bit thick, I have anti-stonechip to go in between the epoxy and topcoat on the floor.

yeah leave it an hour or more

its just it will stick better same day vs next week

Thanks for the advice, appreciated. Work commitments will hold the build up a bit over the next few weeks so will see how things go when I get the time.

Need to get the air fed mask sorted as I fancy doing more painting now.

You should leave the Epoxy an hour before overcoating
