Hi all, my brother-in-law has been spraying cars since he left school at 16, he's now 57.He sprays for a living and then comes home eats his tea then goes down his garage for more spraying.He sprays 2k at home with a non air fed mask and has done for as long as i can remember despite us all having a go at him about it, he smokes 200 fags a week to top it off !
The firm he works for send their sprayers to have a lung test every now and again at a specialist and guess what, he came out a picture of health !

Valid point about the Lead in Cellulose. The Benzene and Xylene in Cellulose aren't much good for you either.

Guy I mention is 62 but we don`t all have the same immune systems. People have taken lung disease from asbestos with one or two fibres yet others....

There is much research to suggest a genetic predisposition to cigarette induced lung cancer and reactions to certain chemical compounds. My Grandmother smoked multiple packets of cigarettes a day since the late 1930s and only died last year - I reckon it would be just my luck to drop dead on my first non-air fed exposure to isocyanates though!

Moseph,what facilities are req for polyester basecoat and 2 K clear,do you need breathing masks and ovens?....as I say only ever used cellulose.

Same deal really. 2k clear coat is fundamentally the same as pigmented 2k.

I wear a Devillbiss full face air fed mask, boiler suit with disposable coverall and nitrile gloves (best protection out of all the standard glove types against chemicals).

The basecoat itself isn't as hazardous as it normally has ony thinner in it without hardener (or it may even be waterbased). 1k clearcoats are available, but they are not a patch on 2k for the gloss and lasting finish.

Ovens are not necessary for any of them. Warming the panels with infra-red is an easier way for the home sprayer to improve drying times and even an ordinary 250W+ infra-red heat lamp to warm the panel slightly isn't a bad addition.

If I was spraying a small section outside with 2k, I'd probably only bother with a good disposable, but for a full car refinish in a booth or even garage sufficiently closed so as to not get loads of dust in the paint, air fed is well worth the money.

Worth noting that you normally need 5CFMish surplus air over your spray gun requirements to ensure a continual positive pressure in the mask. I cheat and use a separate compressor for the mask.

Thanks for that Moseph...reading the other posts it sound dangerous stuff!...yes I have read about the dangers before.I think I would like to try waterbased.

All explained here^^ Anybody here know anywhere that paints 2k that adheres to all that though? I don't think I've ever seen anywhere down here!
