got some pics of mig welding done with the drag technique by pro fabrications....i try to do these but mine dont look like these.........

pulse mig?

check out ZTfab, he is the wizard of mig like tig. apparently doesn't use any pulse mahcines just normal tranny migs. jody collier has tried to match it and failed. well I say failed he gave it a bloody good go and got what I consider to be brilliant results but still not in the same league as ZTfab.

I have got kid of tig weld looking beads from gasless by using a series of loops and the settings a bit cold but still not what I would call stack of dimes welds.

i have heard of ztfab....what is a pulse mig......

Pulse MIG is a smart process to allow more than just Short-arc and Spray Transfer modes. Normal MIG is just constant-voltage DC with no feedback.

In its earliest form, it basically runs the wire in spray transfer, but uses short pules to keep the average current low. It allowed what would normally be globular transfer to act like short-arc. You get the clean spray transfer welds with much lower heat input.

Now it is even more advanced. It completely controls the timing of the short arc and the current. It will manage the heat input in the weld. This can be useful on alloys that can not have high heat damage its metallurgical properties. MIG brazing is one area it is used.

I would say he does use pulse mig.

It looks pretty but I wonder what it is like internally, it would be interesting to section a length of weld and have a closer look.

Not mine, i havn't used a mig for years, a mate of mine does it this way quite often.

well...had a blast at trying to stack the dimes this afternoon.....

not a bad effect but the welds look really cold to me. might just be me though but when I see a lumpy weld like that I automatically think low penetration. would be interesting to see an etched cross section of those fillets

Same as broken said, usually for that technique you're using far more power than you usually would for the thickness, same as you do when tacking, or using the thin metal method.

to me it looks like a very dramatic weave was used to create the 'freeze lines' that make it look like tig, and weaving usually lowers penetration on most applications
