cool..i did have to alter the settings...the original settings i use for three mm box sat really cold and would not puddle properly..so i i turned the power and wire speed up until it sounded right....the puddle flows nice but yes i will cut open and see what penetration is like....i find it easier to drag than push the weld...it would be nice to perfect the technique...

Its not overly difficult to achieve that effect with a normal transformer mig. Just use a fairly big weave with a back and forth motion. Getting the welder set nice is the key, have it a touch colder than you might normally.

The picture Langy has posted is nice and neat, I guess any tacks were kept to a bare minimum, probably the corners only. Fit-up and prep comes into play here, you wont get a tidy looking weld if the fit-up and prep is wrong. It needs to be even and clean, any slight change in prep width/depth will show fairly easily.

One of the easiest joints to achieve it on is probably outside corner, the cool settings allow some penetration, but not enough to burn through, the flick back builds the weld up easily.

You should be pushing, that will give better penetration and better profile.

Some bits i sometimes weld up get the sort of look in the pic below.

It seems to be more a result of too big a gap between the parts.
To fill the gap i have to run the weld down the right hand side a bit then come back a bit and over to the other side.

yes i agree that pushing is the norm for mig and tig....but on a site i was looking at the welder was using this method of dragging the weld as it apparently gives better penetration...not sure my self.....

that's interesting, I would have thought welding over a gap would just create a slightly concave bead where the weld has penetrated too far

pulling the weld pool casues the majority of the heat to be pointed at the rear of the puddle, where the metal has already fused. pushing gives a pre-heat effect and points all the heat at the root of the joint where you want the metal to melt in order to get deeper penetration.

that's how it was explained to me and I kinda makes sense when you visualise the puddle with the torch pointing in various directions.

im not sure of the exact reason for pulling a fluxed weld such as stick or gasless but I assume it is something to do with the slag cooling on the weld and the shielding gasses being formed in the correct place during the weld

They are a bit concave...the pic doesn't show it too well. It then gets turned over and welded from the other side.

Looks cool, but im a function over form kinda guy!! Im sure all the weld pictured are more than strong enough and better than anything I can do I might add!! But I would favour normal techniques I think.

thanks steve.....i have studiedthe weld to day...the spacing is a little out and the heat could do with a notch up...will cut it open tomorrow n have a look on the penetration side of things....got a bindle of stick welding to do as well...joy...
