Stainless Exhaust Made From Pre-Bent Pipes

I didn't get on with using 0.8mm wire on 1.5mm pipe. I would have been much happier with 0.6mm.

Wish I'd known, Malcolm - I could have lent you a reel of 0.6mm. Bear it in mind if you're doing any more.

Did the perf pipe in slip into the solid pipe or did you have to but weld it?
When you say 6 times area I assume it is silencer cross section area versus pipe cross section area that you are tlking about. I that correct?

Are you going to use modern rubber band type mounts or traditional cotton real type mounts? Do the rubber bands give better isolation?

The perf pipe was supposed to be a slip fit outside the solid pipe, but the silencer arrived with the perf the same diameter pipe as the solid pipe so it was butt welded.

Cross sectional area yes.

I'm using the cotton reel mounts. The rubber band ones do isolate better and last longer than the rubbish mounts available these days, but they let the exhaust move around more too.

Nor me, when I did my exhaust with 0.8mm. I had to do a bit of hunting around for 0.6mm but it is available. Think I could only find it in 316, not 308.

What grade of stainless is the pipe and fittings from jetex? I understand this determines the minimum grade of wire you need to use.

I emailed them about it some time ago and didn't receive a reply.

I'm guessing 304!

All the parts were 304. Seems to be the norm for car exhaust stuff. (So 308 wire is best).

I've been thinking about doing my own exhaust for the manta rather than forking out for a custom exhaust. Nice to read this first. Was size reel of wire did you use? 0.7 and 1.0 kg wire won't fit the portamig will it? And the 5kg price is just scary!

0.7kg reels do fit in the Portamig if you cut the middle out with a jig saw and pretend they are 5kg reels.

Tidy work there Malcolm! You've given me an idea for a future project if I ever finish chasing the rust out of my renault...

Is the 4 getting close to making it onto the road?

Paul - I started in about 1992. Stainless steel exhausts really need a purge and ideally dong with TIG if you want them neat. I don't think mine will fall apart but it's not as neat as I would have liked.

I'm giving the Renault 4 a push at the moment - we've got an annual Renault 4 meeting at the start of May and it would be nice to have it on the road in time. Might happen if I use more gaffer tape.
