I'm using a giant bench grinder sharpening the tungsten (red) on the side of the wheel going in a downward direction

i like the idea of the lens and what a great idea to double grind the ends, feather in cap to you, on one of the last pics the middle weld seems like a dodgy mig weld if you get what i mean
and if my stones get contaminated, trust me I'm of to the quacks

Ok now we can have a go, tungsten push that in a bit i work with mine flush but on scratch have it potruding about 3mm max and look at the contamination on the end, your also look like your running too hot looking at the undercut on the pipe pic and the end of your tungsten,
Filler and speed, it looks like your trying to get too much filler into the work and not concentrating on the weld pool, I keep my head down and look both sides of the torch in most tig jobs you only need a tiny amount of filler meterial most joints can almost be achieved by melting the base meterial and dabing filler too it and keep that hand steady. This link is a stainless filler on cast, I think i probebly used under 2 316 filler rods on the whole job, it should give you some idea of how little you need to achieve good results. http://www.mig-welding.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=2021

A good bit of practice is to butt some plates up and sweat them together with no filler, its good at geting arc control as your not worrying about the filler meterial, My inverter has no H/F and i run with that just off flush its easy that way to keep control over the torch, yes id say your defently too hot just enouth heat is needed to create the weld pool, the secret is the weld pool if you concentrate on that you shouldnt go far wrong,.

hi all
been tied up for a bit doing some wrought iron work
shot to london on friday to pick up the airco helliwelder, will post more about that in my other post with pics
anyway fork lifted in to unit wired it straight up chucked the gas on and went for it
tried the foot pedal takes a bit of getting used to standing up but got the gist of it, hf is great
switched to ac with a 2.4 mm tungsten sharpened to a point then just nipped it off a wee bit, cleaned up a bit of thin ally sheet grabbed a filler rod and pushed the pedal
now then the arc started going round in a little circle, and making a rat a tat tat sort of noise, sounds like a tazer going off, i then sort of get it going straight and start blowing holes. LOL
tried turning the amps down and i get more of the tazer sounds
is there a problem or is this just me finding out how hard this is going to be to learn
back in a bit have to take the better half to tesco

by animal you mean pig
2 mm alloy cleaned with a flap disk, i set the amps to max which is 310,
but i am using a foot pedal, tungsten is 2.4 mm about 12 lpm of argon,
shroud number 7, the filler rod i used came with a bunch of stainless filler rods
they looked a bit naff so i gave them a quick once over with the flap disk also
they are about 3-4 mm square
cant understand the strange noise when i arc down, haven't heard it on non ferrous, I'm obviously getting carried away with the foot pedal, thats why I'm blowing thru, i wasn't trying to actually weld any type of joint just had a bash
at trying to lay a bead down
it might be better for me to try on some thicker gage material first ??
OH and i got a couple of electric shocks, nothing major just a sort of tingle,
same as i have got when arc welding trawlers and there wet
cant say i like it though

Did you clean the ally first ? a bit of scotchbrite or sumfink.

get the old acetone or brake cleaner out, it sounds to me like too many amps, Its actualy very intresting stuff to weld, Not enougth heat and and you get contamination with no pool too much and aluminum oxide apears at the pool so it will not weld, the trick is to 1, clean, 2, clean again, 3 clean, then bring the heat in gradualy on the footpedal you will then start to see the aluminum bronze, the pool then starts to shimmer thats when you get your rod in and start to move, from this stage the pool will start to get A) larger B) oxidise, so time to back off the amps and keep moveing, once you get a nice flow and learn the footpedal control it really is fairly easy and not as much of a black art as people have you beleve,
i think im just to impatient, i thought i did give it a good going over with a flap disk
ive got some acetone so i will give that a try, any ideas on the electric shock bit, im not to keen on it really, i know its not to bad but i had a heart attack at 33 so it always gets me a bit worried

i know m8 im only 37 now, i had angina since i was 28 and had a heart attack on the motor way at 33
i am known as a stress head, always seem to have a 1000 and 1 things to do and not enough hours in the day to do them
shouldn't moan in fact i don't moan, i smoke twenty a day and like a good drink
oh and i have the only smoking work shop in the country now
probably soon to be the world

btw, just bought a box of nicrex 312, 2.5's on the bay for £30 inc postage. Half price over BOC.
Don't know why i'm pleased. I can't afford them and there's no job to pay for 'em.... but there will be....
