Stainless steel welding newbie

Yeah, it's awesome when you're in a & e having them dig around in your eye with a needle to scratch the slag out of it ....

I put half a 3.2mm 312 rod on a broken bolt last week (welded a bit of 20mm x 10mm bar to it).

Stopped welding, took my gloves off, then a bit of red hot self releasing slag "pinging off" hit my hand then lodged under my watch strap.

I know this probably comes across a bit "hse nut" but,
i know the slag with stainless is a pain in the posterior for pinging off and finding a bit of exposed skin, but as ive found, if you can flick it off prettt quickly then its not too bad.
As far as getting stuck behind a watch strap, personally dont wear a watch at all while im at work.
And finally, copping a bit in the eye..... come on guys and gals thats exactly what safety glasses are for. Dont take mutch to wear a pair under your lid!!!

Stainless MMA self releasing slag can have anybody at any time! Trust me on this!

Even the most weary super dressed up person with all the PPE possible will get caught out.

Sorry all, wasnt meant to come across cocky.

All i was getting at was to be careful if anyone hasnt had much experience and was having a read before giving it a bash themselves.

The smallest bit of hot slag always finds the gap between jacket and gloves or anywhere else youre not wrong there! Lol

When I weld up locking wheel nuts with 312 rods, I do it on the floor with a trolley jack, instead of lifting the vehicle up on a two poster ramp.

Reason being. As the weld cools and the slag starts to ping off, I am stood up and it hits me in the shins, not in my face with a lifted welding helmet.


The two most dangerous things in my trade for eye injuries are:

Air chisel work and stainless MMA welding!

For both jobs I really do dress up like a girl!
