How would the m.o.t tester know what type of welding method you have used once the join is ground down, primed, sealed and overcoat ontop then under sealed the underside?

Often he wouldn't. He would just check it for strength and security. So long as the job looked as if it hadn't been done recently and looked reasonably decent, that's all he's allowed to do.

But if he thought the job looked as if it was done very recently, and had been hastily covered up, he might well suspect something, and he could ask you to clean off the jollop so that he could check the welding on a retest.

So if you are welding a repair only a week or two away from the MOT, just give it a coat of primer or anti-rust paint and leave it for him to examine.

If you are welding in a place that has to be covered by other panels, rust-treat the inner welded repair completely, as he cannot get in there anyway, and leave the outer panel or repair with just a primer coat, so it can be examined.
