Started a knife

Always fancied a go at making one. Got a start on it tonight. 3mm steel, all I have. Would have preferred slightly thinner but heyho. Total length will be 19.5cm, why I have no idea. It’s just the size of the template, found it on the net. It’s hefty for a knife but a lot of weight will be removed shaping the blade and putting holes in the handle. No idea what scales I’ll use, perhaps G10. The ones on my other knife are G10 and very nice. Anyhow here’s the first picture. No idea how long it’ll take, I’m in no real rush

Absolutely no idea. It came with the work bench. Could be rubbish for a knife but I’m having fun, if I enjoy it I’ll get a decent piece

I attempted to make a knife from a bit of mild steel i had. Held an edge ok but like you quite a thick plate so use it more for chopping with a stick smashing it down and accepting it wouldn't stay that sharp rather than having mild steel blunt quickly and battle to keep an edge.

However, I made it with my own mits,find it useful , made my own mahogany scales and quite like it.

Its a great way to make an old blunt file cut again.

test it with a grinder. If the sparks flower at the end like a firework, it should be a hardenable carbon steel. If they don’t and it is non hardening, you might consider having a relatively coarse bevel. At least then it would be useful.

It must be carbon steel, the sparks when I cut the rectangle were very impressive! Everyday is a learning day, cheers

Actually that is why I enjoy the process in the first place. The technology and science behind knife making is fascinating and there’s so much of it, you’ll never know everything there is to know. Every day is a school day.

Last year I made a load of kiridashis from old files. They were presents for my team. There’s a thread on here, somewhere

Just go play and have some fun. What ever happens enjoy the process, then do it again

01 tool steel is good. Relatively cheap to buy, easy to shape and can be hardened and tempered

Be good to see how it turns out and how you get on grinding the bevels. I've got the spring I had to have changed on the truck waiting to be used for something similar. Need to build the forge yet but seeing others do it helps build some motivation.

I made a shed knife (which is a sharp piece of metal for use in shed emergencies) out of a mechanical hacksaw blade and it's been in use for years now. It keeps a sharp edge surprisingly well. Make your knife and use it and enjoy the process. I also made some from O1 tool steel bought from Cromwell which have been well used.

Those blades are awesome. I’ve got a knife and a couple of scraper things from my grandads time. They must be at least 45 years old, still going strong

As someone with no experience with mechanical hacksaws is that similar to a normal hacksaw blade or is it a bit different.

same thing but a lot bigger and thicker made of high speed steel grind the teeth of and grind the blade end flat and they make good scrapers

All I know is the blade is a little thicker, less flexible and will take a wicked edge
