The wire currently installed is 0.8 for gasless. This is the wire that came with it. I will assume joint position is standing up or layed flat. It's layed flat. Thanks

The gasless wire that comes with the machine will run the same number on the voltage dial & the wfs dial. You can run it about 2pm for joints on 3mm material and run it flat out (5pm) for flat position buts and fillets on 4mm

So dial set at number 2 for both nobs with 3mm thickness.


If that is the case with 3mm at dial 2 then that would mean that using anything thinner like 1.2mm would burn through on dial 1 at its lowest setting 30amps? Does that mean this mig is only good for thicker material?


Or can I still use this mig on anything below 1.5mm thickness without burn through if I use gas and thinner wire, let's say 0.6mm?

Just a dc clamp meter , connect the testing probes to the dinse connectors , you weld and someone reads the values on the meter
This way you will find the voltages settings
(Using DC voltage function)
Put the ground lead into the clamp and again weld and change the settings , someone who reads and writes somewhere the results
You should do these readings with various wire type and sizes if you want more accurate results for different types of wire

Can I use a multi metre?

It now seems that a lot of people work with thicker metals when it comes to welding so their primary focus is just creating a good bead without worrying to much about burn through. However anyone working with material lower than 1.2mm requires far more caution and much more skill and the best possible method i.e gas and a different technique.

Looks like I'm in the thinner category as this is the material I will mostly be working with.

You should forget about using gasless wire on body panels - it can be done but it is not easy and the results you will get with a decent solid wire and a mixed gas are many many times better.

This machine will go down low enough without issue to do body panel work, it doesn't have the smoothest arc at low power compared to some machines I have used (oxford 161 is probably the smoothest, followed by the SIP Ideal 120/150 machines) but it does the job, and is certainly portable.

Yes you are correct, it looks like I need to go with gas and solid wire as i have taken this gassless stuff to its limit on thin metal. What machines create a smooth arc under 200 quid?

It now seems I can go off the dial knowing that the number 2 is overkill on 1mm steal. For something so small you would think it needs to be on 10 .

Couple of patches on the father-in-laws 406 yesterday using this little machine, still going strong. Nice smooth, fine arc, small puddle, plenty of control...

Pleased to have it at my wife's place for welds when required. Saves carting the other machine around in the back of the van.

This isn't spam, I've been a member for years, I just don't post because I always find an answer to my questions.

I feel credit where credits due is in order here,

I have just bought one of these after reading this thread to allow me to weld outdoors on occasion with gasless wire. I have never done gasless mig before so did not want to spend too much in the first instance.

I got top service from Static Arc and the machine is much better than I expected. ( No connection to the company, blah, blah) If it keeps going reliably I will be well chuffed.
