They are also crap IMHO. Don't mix well and it sticks behind the blades.

I think a few million builders might disagree if you told them to mix by hand. Filling a mixer is however something of a dark art

if i was mixing by hand your price is going up on labour lol

prefer mixer than mixing it in a wheel barrow hate mixing in that thing

anyway to further update this i also agree that the cement hoe is a good thing used it today between 2 of us and have gotten the foundations laid tommorow is the garage forecourt to concrete up

before anyone says anything that wall is coming down as foundation of the garage base has failed was only 5" but with single wall on it and issues with water it has sunk alot

ive had to reweld another stronger bar to the hoe i made however it proved a point works a treat so easy to mix with and very little back ache with it

anyway to further post on this subject those holes had to be dug out even more we used 2.3 bags of aggregate all day job mostly 4" thick but some at 5" thick on the cement

no backache only a dull ache between the 2 of us im the older one lol cheers optima wouldnt have made one or used one if you hadnt of posted yours up

my progress is very slow as always, but I do a little bit every now and again,when Im not tired, not at work and its not raining.

getting there now, can't believe how long its taken, but with the rain we've had I its been slow progress as I dont want to play in mud. just need to get some gravel now when Im on holiday at the end of this month. the darker paving slabs have been recycled for the third time, they were originally on the pavement outside my house, but my dad got them many years ago when they replaced them with tarmac.....not sure if they fell off the back of the wagon taking them away,but I think my dad would have offered to save them them the effort of lifting them on the wagon in the first place.

also if I do decide that I need a permanent shed, the old paving slabs should make a decent base.

id have moved those slabs closer to the garage and just built the permanent shed

nice looking but im not a lover of pebbles in a garden prefer grass lawn though looking at yours id still plant some flowers at the wall side just to give a bit of colour looking out the kitchen window

as goes for the flags he had a word with them or threw them some beer money to have them as your rd was flagged the last time i was on your rd they was just tarmacing the corners in your area

I hate gardening, I just want something low maintenance. the only time I look out of my kitchen window is when Im washing pots and pans up. before I started this, it could be 3 or 4 months between times I go in my garden....I don't even hang my washing out.

to further update this post heres what i have been doing

started off like this


subsidence caused by broken drains and only 2" concrete floor that it was stood upon



now looks like this with internal wall and a good amount of external wall built with beams and boards installed on the roof



a bit more work to finish it off cement all mixed using the cement hoe

some of the original bricks have been reused after cleaning them off those that survived the take down of the original wall

oh and the bricks are near enough to original but even at that they seem way off on there colour

ive had time to play with the mixes for concrete so i hope this info helps

using a new spade full as reference ( a spade shovel ) to fill a normal wheel barrow

1, 3 pebbles, 2 sand, 1 cement

2, 6 pebbles, 4 sand, 2 cement

aggregate mix

3, 6 aggregate and 2 cement

4. 9 aggregate and 3 cement

mixing normal sand and cement mix

5, 6 sand and 2 cement

6, 9 sand and 3 cement

2,4,6 can be mixed in a wheel barrow however it causes more mess with water splashing out of wheel barrow whilst dragging the hoe to mix the mix

1,3,5 easy to mix less splash out and you can move the product around the wheel barrow much better than the above mix ratio it also mixes better

another point on the mixes is put cement between the shovels

so 2 pebbles 1 sand put a layer of cement then 1 gravel and 1 sand and then another coat of cement mixed really well

i found putting cement just on the top harder to mix than using it between and on top
