Sterling SMG L2A3 Replica

It's not all I've done all day. Some tidying, carrying on with my pillar caps and drunk a fair bit of IPA:

Going to need a smidge of weld where I overshot with the Dremmel grinding disc...

Hopefully the guide, centre pop marks will fill up with (brightly coloured) paint...

I'm debating buying a TIG add on kit for the Parweld MMA inverter. Only got MMA & MIG here.

I'm beginning to doubt whether I can do this justice tbh. Certainly not with these plans which seem simplified and way off the mark of the real thing. The fine detail just isn't there. Really not what I was hoping for.

OK he's making the replicas from aluminium but they seem a much closer copy to the original. The plans I have...well they seem like a rough facsimile of the real thing. Something an ex squaddie will straight away pick up on. It won't strip/assemble like the real thing. The foresight bending profile on the plans I have here for instance appears way off to all the images I can find on the web for instance. I can't show it, copyright and all that. Can't see it would have made any difference to get it right.

Now, I am quietly confident some of you will realise there are a few bits missing, the barrel and bolt for instance? This particular gun was (illegally) seized by yet another know-nowt at GMP. When it was returned to it's rightful owner these bits were missing? You couldn't make it up, it is being held by me as part of a (very large) claim.

It is indeed Sir, but they are all a variation on a theme. I think the most important thing to remember here is that there is no definitive example, of many things. The blog you posted the link to above of the chap making Star Wars Blaster replicas is a good example. He shows a great deal of (very interesting) detail, but that detail is from one manufacturer. Other manufacturers had different subtleties and variations. Remember "War Finish" wasn't a finish at all, it was a simple matter of does it work? If so, get it out the door and get on with the next one.

Best of all they don't just rely on you to print the sheets out correctly, they include all the measurements taken from a real Sterl...

I stopped making mine for fear of contravening the VCRA.

How have you made a replica and avoided doing so?

I was really looking forward to making it and giving it to my ex services big brother as a pressie.

I always offer it to police to inspect when they approach and never had a problem. I would never keep or transport the replica without the costume

I'm more of a Star Trek fan, but having worked with a guy for 6 or 7 years who was a walking encyclopedia on Star wars I learnt a fair bit, sometimes not by choice He had 4 costumes, Stormtrooper, Tie fighter pilot, Boba Fett and another I've forgotten.

I went to work with a guy one day, same van. We were on a roof and I turned round to see him with a tricorder around his neck pointing a phaser at me with it making "the noise", (both toys I might add ). He'd brought them in especially to show me and taken them to the roof in his backpack.

Pulling away in the van he'd put it in 1st and say "Engage!"

I struggled to watch Star Trek for many years afterwards.

For me it's all about the accuracy of the prop recreation rather than the films so I'm not the encyclopedia that some are
