They are Stubs 65 rods, plain and simple, they are a special "blend", that is not a standard "E" number, very much like a Eutectic Xuper 680s.
They are NOT suitable for Cast Irons, they are a dissimilar metal/high alloy electrode designed for R&M use on high alloy & tool steels and dissimilar metals, NOT including cast iron, there were other Stubs rods for cast iron and cast iron to other metals, such as the 8 series.
As in 8, 8 FN, 8FNN, 8 NIFER & 81's.

The 8s are the Stubs rods for cast iron (or were). In fact it used to be called the Stubs cold welding process........Im not sure if they developed it or simply marketed it
However the 65 is (was) a standard E number, they are E312 as in 29 Cr 9 Ni

Mind the Eutectic Xuper 680s is an AWESOME rod!
It's got me out of trouble LOADS of times, just expensive, however, worth every penny IMHO.

Years ago I had an interview with Eutectic at their HQ, Middlesex. During interview I recall aircraft flying past interview office window, was an exciting, yet surreal experience. I never got the job and with hindsight, don't think I was really cut out to be a salesperson. The T&C's within their contracts were restrictive with regards to moving companies. Secretive is an understatement!

I know exactly where you mean......Feltham I think it was. Ive been in that office I think. I was asked to go for interview for a technical job but it didnt sound good to me.
Once upon a time they had a trick of breaking a file and welding it back together with 312 (their 680).........but they didnt call it 312 and none of the salesmen were told what they were selling...........smoke and mirrors

Yes office located at Feltham. Was good experience for me at the time, Young 20 -ish years old, first interview Edinburgh hotel, thought I'd blown it, then a first and last telegram inviting me down to Feltham. All expenses paid, including loss of a day's pay, which I thought was decent.

Company I worked for at that time, we exclusively purchased Eutectic consumibles, quite an array in fact. So I had a good grasp of specs and applications. Another bloke with sales experience got first place, if the other way around and, from memory, I doubt I would have taken up post. Just like you, something appeared not quite right.

The last I heard is that most of the Eutectic rods were being made in Brazil by a firm originally set up by Messer but now privately owned. There were previously made in Turkey by a firm bought by Lincoln.

Last time I spoke to Derek was a few months ago but he was still OK on the job he was on. If it gets tough up there any of the welding companies will set him on, no problem.
I had dinner with him last year up in Aberdeen.

First contact with DC was at our old campus, I was trialing plant from various manufacturers. DC and, LE came along and totally changed the state of play, for the better. DC was very dynamic with his approach to dealing with FE establishments, he obviously had the backing at this time, with his employer, too. Much was gained by both parties, albeit, my organisation gaining massively with state of the art plant. Which in turn, would pay off, for LE, with potential plant sales and, there were some.

Since DC moved on for very good reasons, the relationship is not the same. I hardly ever see, or get the odd email saying I'm in your neck of the woods, will pass in for a coffee, etc from LE rep. Which really is a great shame.

Good to hear DC is doing well, he is too knowledgeable and skilled, to find himself struggling for work.

Hi , I have some of these rods, they seem to weld nice, can they eased on mild steel.

I used Stubs 65s to repair a Carver clamp years back - it's still going strong.

@Andrew Owen: There are probably younger minds than mine here who are up to date on rods. I think using them on mild steel would work but would be a costly option. Stubs rods weren't cheap IIRC.

I've a bundle of 65XL rods (no box though) These were given to me years ago and I was told at the time that they were a dissimilar metal rod and that's what I've used them for ever since. Last job was to weld some stainless nuts onto some mild steel collars and this was achieved easily. Given that they were about £1.50 per rod years ago, it would be a waste to use them on just mild steel. Best kept by for that tricky job.
