I made a knurled ring for a little Albrecht chuck.

I've only got a push-type "Knacker your spindle bearings" knurler so they're barely deeper than scratches but should be enough to provide some grip. I've just realised as I'm typing this that I drilled the 4mm hole right down to the slot so it's not actually gonna clamp on.

Compare the size with the radiator, it's a child's play kitchen.

In my defence I was looking on my phone, and the ligth in my (real) microwave broke a few years ago, so I was blinded by desire for an easy fix for it.

I usually discover these kind of mistakes rigth after I made them. Oh well the second one is going to turn out a lot nicer overall :-)

The second one might have a blind hole so you won't see how far the tap drill wanders.

I have used one for a while.
Best advice is to wear when you need it, not all the time.
With my damage it took 2 years to recover. It is only when I used it when I needed did my recovery speed up.

Oh yes, as my old dad used to say.
Change hands after 99.

Old Fashioned Repairs in a Modern world.

Or TYA cheep way of fixing tools.



A Nice Firmer chisel, with box wood handle and a Brass feral.
The edge has worn and the tang was loose in the handle.



Rust had worn the hole for the tang.
This design of the handle does not allow the hole to be opened up and a dowel fitted.
Bu they can be saved.

Clean the rust of, clean the hole out. Clean the handle.
The handle come up better with wire wools and Meths to clean up and remove the dirt and grime.

I like to use a wax and oil mix and a good buffing by hand.

The tang is soft and will bend or snap if you are to hard with cleaning it. You need to use a light hammer with good sharp short blows to bring it back in line. As the next stage will soften the metal.



Fill the handle with sulphur.
This is the old fashioned way. I use it a lot. but oddly never posted it.
But a good member here prompted me to.




Warm the tang, you are looking for a dark straw colour. So it is best to start with a clean tang.
Don't heat in one place and watch the shade travel. Move the tang and adjust your position for an even colour.
Please wear gloves, that is my left arm were feelings are not always present.



Press fit, by hand the tang and handle together.
Do this in a ventilated place. That door was opened as soon as the picture was taken.
Zoom in you see the sulphur bubbling and showing up as a dark smudge. That's what you looking for.



Enjoy using a decent old tool.

Experience: something you get just after you really needed it.

It acts as a glue and it foams up to fill the voids.
It is the traditional way of fixing tangs to box wood.

This is a very natural, strong and repeatable way of securing tangs in handles. I have used this method with success, especially re-using old file handles on new files.

EDIT: As above don't try this with plastic handles!

Today I made a clutch alignment tool for a VW tyype 1 engine from a yorkshire 15mm coupler pushed onto a 15mm pipe, i had to file the stop from the middle of the coupler and added a T on the end as a handle,, also made a bit of connection pipe for the crankcase breather filter using two 22mm street elbows.

Depressing.
240 bullet connectors to crimp on to these.
Then 24 trs leads to cut in half. Strip and and another 146 bullet connectors to crimp.

Could have soldered direct but then Id have to comit to normal/half normal or thru and lose ease of reconfiguring

Yesterday I made another job to do.

A few weeks ago I acquired this fuel tank for a long term "Keep be busy" project.
This Engine gets worked on when I don't have mush to do, it is waiting parts. But That is difficult as no auto jumbles.



Only the past owner knows how long it was sat outside.



After a week in citric acid the rust inside and out has gone.
The holes were filled with lead and tin solder.

The engine to tank bracket needed 2 of the 3 spot welds re done, they had cracked.




Fitted, the list of parts is growing.

The primmer went on as did the first coat of red.
It was going well until the final coat.

Then.



The words I said are not allowed here.

This is a peace of reclaimed Oak Flooring.
It has a new use. But it needed a few hours of work. But due to the lack of sleep skills recently I was doing it over night.

Here I have used a hand moulding plane the shape the ends. Yes There is a deep under cut. But that will go with the sanding needed to remove the horrible finish.



The joints are filled with a hard wax, using multiple shades to blend them in.



This nice hand scraper makes a very fine finish. It also removes the surplus wax and as it does it fills any small blemishes.


First of many French Polish coats. The secret is to use a hand scraper or wire wool to de nib the polish.



PAD (Paper Aided Design) to allow the holes needed for the engine.



The extra feet and the 4 blocks the engine sits on are recovered from more flooring scraps.



That is about the size of the scraps I got.



So I made a few more than I needed. The surplus are going to be used in MIS on some bench tools.

This guy thinks he knows it all, but 99.99% of the time it is BS and taken from the WWW.

This is a classic example.



This was set up at my place to show what was wrong.

Paraffin Blow lamps are very common, 60% are not worth repairing but look good to look at. The other 40% are worth spending time and funds to get them going. Service parts are cheep.
I always replace all seals, they are in the kit.

This person only replaced the cup washer in the pump and "Declared it was now fit for use."

First use, he primed it, pumped it up and after it was burning nicely the Pump to tank washer failed. Allowing paraffin vapour to escape with the resulting fire.

I now have to get a new CO2 extinguisher, as it was sued to make the torch safe in MIS.

When it all had calmed down and new coffee made, our expert was heard to say.

It had to be cheep parts from china, he could not made that mistake.

A rectum on legs.

Finally got into the workshop to finish the resin hybrid Bowl that launched itself out of the chuck a couple of weeks ago!

It's not brilliant but I am pleased to have rescued it from the scrap pile
