Talk to me about wall storage systems.

As per title I am looking at hanging tools on the wall in the mancave extension rather than the conventional roll cab/draws etc. Dont need the full house tool kit but would like to get a decent collection on the wall as a space saving idea.. I got four sheets of steel peg board and not unhappy with the pegs for spanners although they do pop off the board if you are not careful. I am looking for more ways of hanging the pliers, hammers, hacksaws etc.. what’s good and what’s rubbish in the ready made hanging systems? Ed thinks we we can 3D print all this gear but I would sooner save that for the things that can’t be bought.

my dad always put plywood on the walls then hung everything on nails, worked really well

same thing over a bench etc... really handy when you;re working at the bench and can just reach up for what you need

there was a small chelf, probably stuck out 5 inch with loads of hols drilled into it for screwdrivers to drop into

Wranglerstar on youtube did a whole wall of it in his workshop and it works really well. As you say you can make a hanger to suit anything and move them around

I have got these for spanners but they are not brilliant



And was going to use these on narrow shelves for sockets



So ratchets, pliers, hammers etc need to be hung. The plastic tool clips at B&Q dont look too clever.

If you've already got ply on the walls loose the peg boards and do some wood bothering.

Do the hooks for the spanner’s lift when removing them, just weld them on.
Is wood good for a metal shop.
At least there’s somewhere to store your tennis balls behind the vice.

Walls definitely make good storage for tools etc, Most useful things right in front of you, I recon that you will be aiming for something a"little" tidier than mine.

I got a load of old peg board from shop displays that is about 10mm thick and it came in 8' x 4' sheets, i found it worked well on roofing laths and then just made it up into panels fitted to the wall, I just pushed in a brown raw plug and a screw and it made great tool storage and even when i hammer by it nothing really falls off.

I just stuck a sheet (glued and screwed, Gripfill) of 18mm marine ply to the wall above the lathe and whenever I need storage, make it up. The French cleat system is useful if you constantly move stuff around but you can just as easily unscrew an item and refix it.

Looks like I also screwed some Linn bin racking to the wall too...

I don't like peg/wall/shadow boards. You could take the contents of one large cantilever toolbox and use it to fill a whole board. Seems like an awful waste of space. For me, tools go in a cupboard or drawer. Tins go in an old filing cabinet, small items sorted out in a bank of bisley drawers under the bench.

my recommendation: 1" weldmesh, fastened to wall on 1" standoffs.
simply bend some short lengths of fencing wire [1] to make hooks/rings/hangers.

you can use it like pegboard, with ready-made fittings, but a couple of felt nails nailed into a piece of 12mm ply can be used as a backer for custom hangers.

you can also get shopfittings that match -




i find it much more versatile than pegboard.
apart from anything else, mounted across a window, it provides extra security without blocking much light, and uses space that would be otherwise empty.

I have never seen or heard of the "cleat" system, that does look the biz. I just watched a huge tube vid of a guy that installed that floor to ceiling and it is really neat

Its not for the main workshop Pete, its just a few tools for assembly in the toy shed. All the other ops are done elsewhere so just need to hang a half decent range of tools on the wall out of the way.

One of the popular YouTube woodworkers (Maybe Mathias Wandel) made the point that while you can move things around on a French cleat system, you never really do so it just ends up being a lot of effort to make a load of dust traps.

I was thinking just the same as I read down the thread, far better for shelves.

Although in a working environment its handy to be able to find and check tools at a glance.
