Talk to me about wall storage systems.

To be honest @8ob I'd just shove some ply up on the walls and whack some nails / screws in to support the tools. You can get all singing all dancing peg boards etc., but what's a bag of nails and a hammer cost? I get the feeling that the peg boards if they don't have the correct spacing for a particular tool then you'll end up having to make a special bracket etc.

Knowing how many tools you have you need to pack them as tightly as possible

I built a Unistrut frame over the bench, over but not attached. If I beat anything on the bench the stuff in the bins doesn't jump out.

I really struggle with working space and organising things. I think I need to separate working space and storage. All the thousands of bits I've collected over the years that "will come in handy one day". Need a separate shed for them! Just spotted my tray work pieces from college.

I digress...I bolted some t&g, chipboard floorboard offcuts to the Unistrut and used screws. Never finished as usual...

You can get 2 or 3 mm cnc square punched then galvanised sheets fairly easily ..they tend to be the security screens which are often put over empty building doors & upper floor windows . I cut up a few mtr squares of such screens about 18 months ago
Stuff like this" perforated-metal.net/perforatedmetal/square-hole-perforated-sheet. Doing a non-Google search of steel supplier is likely to be a good bet .

He was only 9 months late coming to Wales on an urgent delivery.

Although fair play to him he pulled out the stops getting some timber for my sisters shed. Only hiccup was he didn't feel the transit was up to pull the load so called in the big guns with my Range Rover

Old welding rods, that have gotten a bit damp etc are good to bend into "hooks". I got given a whole box of Oerlikon 3.2mm 6013s that were well past it.

As per title I am looking at hanging tools on the wall in the mancave extension rather than the conventional roll cab/draws etc. Dont need the full house tool kit but would like to get a decent collection on the wall as a space saving idea.. I got four sheets of steel peg board and not unhappy with the pegs for spanners although they do pop off the board if you are not careful. I am looking for more ways of hanging the pliers, hammers, hacksaws etc.. what’s good and what’s rubbish in the ready made hanging systems? Ed thinks we we can 3D print all this gear but I would sooner save that for the things that can’t be bought.

Plastic peg boards like aldi / lidl are not very good, the boards are ok but the tool clips are crap. Fiddly to grab something and put back and they break. Id say the same for better peg boards in terms of fiddlyness.

For often go to tools, I have them on magnetic bars, they won't hold a big hammer of course but for smaller stuff whip it off, stick it back on

This morning, in a hurry sice its Saturday, (rugby in the afternoon), i decided to make a cupboard for my stacks of gearcutters, and hopefully keep each dp together. A lad locally was doing up his house, so I called him and scrounged some sofit wood. Fetched it home and made a 24 by 33 frame, found some ply for a back. Then went looking in the workshop for some doors and hinges. What did I find right at the back? A cupboard....
It's been there a while, and being chipboard will be rubbish, but it will do the job, essentially the chipboard will keep things enclosed, the weight will be on the back.

I've seen these [picture below] years ago and though it was a good spacesaving idea. Easy to make but using angle iron for the frames . I'm sure Aldi or Lidl had something similar for sale many moons ago.

Finally getting around to fitting out the man cave extension, I like the idea of the fold out racks. Fitted some of these wall cupboards and was thinking of junking the shelves in favour of two or three side hinged boards as per you post. None of the locks are keyed alike and there are a total of fifteen doors if I hang the other two cupboards, thinking of mag catches and knobs instead, not really any need to lock these.

I don't like peg/wall/shadow boards. You could take the contents of one large cantilever toolbox and use it to fill a whole board. Seems like an awful waste of space. For me, tools go in a cupboard or drawer. Tins go in an old filing cabinet, small items sorted out in a bank of bisley drawers under the bench.

With you on that. Hanging stuff on walls is inviting it to get grotty, damp and rusty. Maybe fine if you have a heated, humidity controled space and don't do any hot works/dust generation I guess.

Thought I would have a tinker with those cupboards tonight,made a hinged leaf to divide the depth of the cupboard in two. There is enough room for screwdriver racks on the back of the cupboard,both sides of the leaf and the inside of the door.

Started with the back and made a holder for the long screwdrivers, bought a few lengths of 20x40 ali angle from B&Q.

Made the hinge post for the leaf using the same angle, this gives the leaf an offset so it doesn't clash with the front door and lets it open at 90degrees.

Enough depth to mount a row of Torx screwdrivers on the back, I will add a row of allen screwdrivers above them.

Still room for the ordinary screwdrivers on the front of the leaf and inside of the front door.

Done a bit more organising.

Managed to squeeze a decent set of af and metric spanners X2 and all the 1/2" drive socketery on the peg boards. Still more room on there.

Managed to get all the 3/8" drive gear in AF+ metric into one of the cupboards.

And all of the Ferrex gear into one of the double door units.
