I have been looking at getting a drone .
Any one have experience .
Any one have experience .
I was moderately enthusiastic about getting a drone until I discovered that you can't fly one within 50m of a railway track, which our house is.
Seems a waste not to be able to use it to check your roof, take vids of barbecues in your garden etc.
I know that's totally unhelpful to the OP (unless you also live next to a railtrack!)
Have a DJI Mavic Mini and would highly recommend any DJI product. Played with a few mates generic drones and found them useless, bought the Mini to inspect my roof and it's an amazing bit of kit.
Not the cheapest though...
Should have asked what for, mines for videos and photos.
I used an Aldi one to film one of our car trials . . got higher . . . wind caught it - shut everything down - watched it bug ger off down wind towards the farm yard . . . saw it finally drop out of the air but couldn't see where it "landed" due to buildings etc . . . the clue to it's location was a puzzled looking sheep staring into the corner of it's pen . . .I was given a simple drone a few years back and had an unpleasant incident. I flew it from our paddock well clear of anything sensitive but the wind caught it in an updraft, and it flew out of range and crashed extremely close to the A21 trunk road. My blood runs cold when I think what could have happened if it had hit a car.
I did buy a much more sophisticated DJI Mavic Mini which probably wouldn’t have been so affected by the wind and also should ‘return to base’ if it looses signal, but actually I bottled out and sold it without even opening the box!
I have a DJI Mavic 2 Pro and I am not a licensed drone pilot.
A mobile phone is used as part of the control handset. I use Android phones and the navigation buttons are not easy to get at when mounted. If a popup obscures the screen, I have a hard time getting rid of it.
The firmware prevents take off in restricted areas. Almost the entire Adelaide (an Australian capital city) plain is a restricted area because of the main airport. Consequently, I cannot lift the drone 300 mm off the ground in my back yard.
There are height limitations and distance limitations. I cannot fly near people, I cannot fly in most public spaces. I cannot fly in parklands, or national parks. There are numerous small airports and helipads with associated restricted areas.
The bottom line is, make sure you can do what you want before you purchase.
If I were licensed and submitted a flight plan, I would have more freedom but in some public spaces, public liability insurance would be required.
