Hello everybody....
This is my first post on this fine forum & I've registered specifically to reply to this post, I too have a dying "Esab Eye-Tech" helmet & it's been dying for years to be honest, it's on it's second lens but it's over 15 years old so has been a trusty stalwart & I have no complaints with it at all. It's dying through lack of use as I'm now medically retired & don't use it much but was about to bin it & buy a bog standard headshield for the times I need my welder for something & then I came upon this advice about replacing the batteries, I have carefully opened the lens cartridge & low & behold 2 batteries are indeed present (was told by an "expert" there were no batteries) so I'm off to Maplins tomorrow morning for some replacements & hopefully I'll then have the quality piece of kit back in perfect working order. So I'd like to thank everyone that contributed to this thread as it will have helped a boatload of people out, I'm chuffed I really am.........
I dumped my Esab because of dud batteries. I'd originally thought to open the case and replace them but unfortunately when I got in there the whole lot was potted so the batteries were embedded in resin. No doubt with lots of careful picking and peeling I could have got them out and replaced them but..... a replacement cost just over twenty quid and given the years I'd had the helmet I certainly had my money's worth out of it so laid it to rest with no complaints.
I have heard that the later Esab's had that resin type stuff to seal everything in place, mine is one of the earlier models as I bought it when they were just out & it cost me a small fortune but was well worth it for the difference in comfort I gained. I'm just attempting to fix it for the challenge really & I still do some welding at home from time to time & can't really justify a new helmet for the little use it would get....
I have a Murex ADF helmet which has the Protane Electronic LC41-1 ADF. The helmet is unused but having not been used for about 15 years the batteries were dead I was quoted £213 for a replacement daylight robbery... According to the spec the hermetically sealed batteries should last 7 years. Should have been replaceable.....
