lots of things were done that way ,,, or brazed with oxy acet ,,, tig was known as heli arc and was something akin to unicorn poo ,,, many had heard about it , but few had ever claimed to have seen it.

Can't believe how small and cheap these things are! Someone posted about a tiny draper one not so long ago and sung it's praises. I assume they're all the same inside just in different cases!

I ran out of mig wire today when welding on my S600. I wanted to at least fit the next repair section so I used this mini arc welder turned down to 20 amps and 1.6mm rods to tack the section in place
Some tacks went well. Many others did not! Using stick on a car isn't going to be good anyway I new that. But it tends to want to tack on one side only if there is any sort of a gap.
So some of them had to be re welded 3 or 4 times with flap disc in between.
If you were on a super strict budget and only had a one off car repair to do - maybe. It'll take about 3 times longer than MIG but you could weld it up that way.
For me it was an interesting experiment but I'll stick to the gas MIG and make sure I keep a spare spool of wire this time!
I'll use it for lots of other stuff though. I'll be making custom low rise car ramps soon so I'll use this welder and 2mm rods for that.

I've got its bigger brother here. Incredible little box turning out some reasonable work in awkward places. Seems to run 2.5s and 3.2s at around the settings you would expect and never hit the thermal overload yet. Did ask about its safety on here a while back as it came with a 13A plug moulded onto the cable but can theoretically weld up to 220a which seems a bit optimistic from a 13A socket. Anyway just tested continuity between case and earth pin, seemed OK and so far never needed to wind the dial up so for occasional amateur use it's pretty handy.

It's been very good. Gets used occasionally but any time I've used it, it's been perfect.
For the £ it's a screaming deal and very handy little bit of kit.

Did you reverse the cables for welding this thin material, ie, torch in - and earth in +, worth a try next time if there will be a next time.

Yes I think the rods call for negative connection on packaging so that's how I was running them
