shut down production for another week.
There’s a reason the best welders are often offshore.
Shuting down production is a huge decision to do a weld, they will come up with all sorts of schemes to avoid actually shutting down. Bolted schemes, composite wraps, Quick flange etc. And god forbid for an extra week, there are rigs in the North Sea now that if shutdown for a week wouldnt be restarted as they are not viable. When your the one accountable to hit the stop button, it pays to be sure there are not going to be any extra weeks unplanned outage, hence why so much sandbagging goes into the preparation.
This thread makes out that the streets of Aberdeen are still paved with gold, if you can wear a Kromer backwards, the days of hundreds of welders and pipefighters building rigs in situ are long gone. Its all now built and part commissioned before hook up.
As for the best welders, there is one on every installation called BINS, usually a crane driver with a similar nick name too.
