Apologies for the Chinese lessons over the last few days. They were both cunning and persistant. We've added in some more anti-spam stuff that should hopefully sort it.

If any member runs into a message saying they've posted too many times or temporarily has missing new thread, reply, or conversation buttons let me know as it means I've screwed up the settings.

Thanks for reporting the spam. Makes it much easier to keep them out without affecting everyone else.

Seems we're being targeted a lot by spammers at the moment. Of the 31 most recent account setup attempts in the last 3 days, 21 have been by obvious spammers.

Pink is banned, blue is pre-modded, grey is rejected.
Gives you an idea of what goes on behind the scenes to try and keep the forum spam-free.

Yes please. Don’t reply to threads, it just keeps any nefarious links active for longer. The sooner the post and poster are removed the better.

That's not really what is going on from what i have seen, they just want to dump a linky into a thread, so it receives google ratings.

As this forum get's allot of traffic, it's prime for spammers to attempt to post here.

And as Wozzah posted above, replying just floats it up to a higher level of google ratings.
And worse, is replying by quoting, so the hot link get's duplicated, again more links, higher google ratings.

Now that don't preclude someone from quoting the spammer, and then going into the quote, and changing the linky.....
I've made up my own like www.I-Like-Spam.com

But best to simply leave it alone as requested by the mods.

That’s correct, it makes them really easy to spot.

In some ways, it's amazing how little is needed to stop spammers as long as it's something that's a bit different to what most websites use. I have a contact form on my website and there was a lot of c*ap getting past CAPTCHA so I added a very simple question. I was a bit nervous about blocking valid requests because of people not understanding the question so I set up the initial configuration to accept absolutely anything: as long as you typed something into the box, it would accept it.

That turned out to be sufficient: I haven't had any spam through the contact form since. All the spammers (which are probably bots) just leave the box empty. so it gets rejected.
