If you live in an area with largely poor single track roads and rarely see a motorway, they are great for seeing over the bracken and hedges, have bigger tyres to protect wheels from pothole damage and 4wd is handy when you need to take to the verge.

A saloon is a nicer vehicle to drive, though an SUV has its place, just not in cities.

I guess mine is more of a UV than SUV though.

I would say yours is closer to an F-150 (make that a GMC K-1500) than an SUV........

Just looking at vehicles on the road, suv have been outselling saloons or estates for many years, it’s no wonder that the manufacturers are giving up on those models.

I think its partly due tofolk become more couch potatoe, they need bigger higher up motors

The in-line Ariel 800 cc fan cooled flat four was interesting, and likely where the BMW K series machines grew from.
Trying to get the better of a Val Page design in its niche, is likely a tough nut to crack for anyone...

I saw a good example of the differences between the Japanese and us when Honda were commissioning some door presses.
The tooling was marking the outer skin so one of their guys ground the tooling back, built it back up with spray welding then ground it back and finally stoned it to the right finish.
When we had a similar problem a fitter would do the grinding, a welder would build it up so the fitter could grind it back then a jig & tool fitter would do the final stoning.
One Jap could do the job of 3 UK trades, we had the unions to thank for that with demarcation.

Japanese work ethics were pretty extreme. I worked with engineers in our Kyoto Hydraulics plant when I was with Eaton Hydraulics. The young engineers lived in a dormitory at the factory and worked 80 plus hours a week over 7 days.

They were meticulous, though not sure their quality of life was much better than under communism.

I have never been to South Africa, I was engineering manager of their Glenrothes plant in Scotland, though frequently visited headquarters in Minneapolis.

What I'm saying is it wouldn't happen in this country at the time, example: when I worked for ABB I installed some robots at Longbridge including writing the operating software, fast forward a few years I got a job at Longbridge as a maintenance sparky and worked on the area where those robots were, if there was a problem I was not allowed to touch them as robots were looked after by fitters (came from the days of the first robots been hydraulic) so I had to stand and watch a fitter struggle to get the robot working while I could have had it running in less than a minute.
Some months later I was moved to a spot welding line and happened to be passing a robot when it stopped mid-cycle so I just pressed a button to get it going, but I had been spotted by a fitter who came up and told me I was breaking the demarcation rules, but how did I get it going so quick as in the past they had to manually move the robot back to start position and run the whole cycle again, I showed him the quick way and was accepted as an "honorary fitter"

Unfortunately not the Engineering Manager from Kyoto visited me in Scotland and I had an engineer who worked for me over there.
