The Correct Way To Sharpen Drill Bits Using A Picador Drill Sharpening Jig With Custom Base

For anyone interested in setting up a Picador drill sharpening jig correctly.......................

Ensure you set the drill bit with the cutting edges at the 5-to-5 position which will in turn ensure that the chisel edge is ground to approximately 45 degrees to the cutting edge.

I found setting the jig to the 59 degree position which achieved a total 118 degrees point angle gave very good results.

Mine was mounted on a pedestal grinder when I got it.

usually freehand but may dig it out in the future.

so are you sharpening on the flat side of the wheel ,,,, the bit your not meant to grind on .
could the jig be moved to grind on the face of the wheel , so it could be dressed and get a lot more life out of a wheel ,,, Personally I just sharpen drill bits freehand, never seen the need for a jig , but it looks handy I guess.

According to most grinding wheel manufacturers you are not meant to grind on the side of the wheel.

That's the difference between a blacksmith and and engineer

Yes, you can cobble together a half decent drill bit without a jig but much quicker, safer and better with one.

The way to test that is to put some engineers blue on the tip of a hand ground drill bit and then slowly regrind with a jig. You will then see where you went wrong.

The same as as for chisels and plane blades. You can sharpen without a jig but you run into problems.

My guess is that you also sharpen your plane blades and chisels by hand

that is true for the majority of stuff but using small drills in holes that are going to get tapped need to be 100 percent accurate . make that 95 percent as none of them will drill a perfect round hole they need to be reamed if you do

May I suggest where you can insert one. Just to make sure you know both sides perfectly well.

Your grinding jig looks like a dangerous bodge to me, yes it will work. I wouldnt call any of it "The Correct Way" and there are several disadvantages with your chosen 118 degree angle.

I would rather have a slightly less accurate drill than be missing my teeth. If it digs in the side of the wheel by mistake, you will be missing them and possibly worse. Grinding wheels need to be respected.

Used to use this style guide on the belt sander but I killed the last one.
I use a trend diamond jig for a microbevel.

Tbh they only see the belt sander once they've been trashed. Less heat than a grinder

funny, 50 years plus free hand and do a pretty good rotor broach sharpen...
we we're tought by a master and if u messed up u got a wrap over the knuckles...
u soon get the hang of it....hahaha....
not for the snowflake wokers about tho.....
