The Correct Way To Sharpen Drill Bits Using A Picador Drill Sharpening Jig With Custom Base

My teacher was one of a few people that I have ever known who could grind a drill,freehand,to cut undersize. What? Shock? Horror?… nope, if you go measure say a 10mm drill, the blank only measures 9,9mm. The 0,1mm difference between hole size and cut size is achieved by grinding off center. If you dont, it will seize. Paul was probably one of the most generous people I ever met. Willing to share all he knew. I wouldn’t be able to do half of what I can if he hadn’t been like he had been. Never met somebody who could free hand grind left hand drills as easily and accurately as he did. Also one of the few people who could,and did, take a brand new, machine ground ,quality make drill bit and re grind it,freehand, to get it to cut better and more on size than it was from the factory. I still have drills he resharpened,even though he passed 21 years ago…

May I suggest where you can insert one. Just to make sure you know both sides perfectly well.

Your grinding jig looks like a dangerous bodge to me, yes it will work. I wouldnt call any of it "The Correct Way" and there are several disadvantages with your chosen 118 degree angle.

I would rather have a slightly less accurate drill than be missing my teeth. If it digs in the side of the wheel by mistake, you will be missing them and possibly worse. Grinding wheels need to be respected.

funny, 50 years plus free hand and do a pretty good rotor broach sharpen...
we we're tought by a master and if u messed up u got a wrap over the knuckles...
u soon get the hang of it....hahaha....
not for the snowflake wokers about tho.....
wont be any on here thank god....

Hi Just do things the way you want to do it.

If you want to do it blindfolded that's ok too

Or perhaps to make things really difficult do it by reflection in a mirror

I have the picadore drill sharpener and also the same but an off brand , the off brand one I have never made work but the picador one is very usable.

I think it's some angle difference / copy casting.

My understanding as Admin is that if you join this forum you agree to the rules.
You do seem to be going out of your way to not make friends.
The rules say be nice to people, especially new members but equally, new members should be nice to existing ones.
I'm not keen on petty bickering, it's childish and drags the tone of the forum down.
