That's what fitting a dedicated wire motor transformer fixes.

I had thought about it until I read about the wire speed not changing with the power settings too, but thinking about it it should not matter once you get use to the wire speed settings again.

I have a trannie, and a bridge, and plenty of wire I think I even have a 12V volt meter too

Nothing can go wrong

Honestly - I was crapping myself but, if you can read a circuit diagram (and the SIP PCB really ain't that complex) then it's pretty straightforward. The important thing is to read the text and review the circuit diagram until you are absolutely certain that you understand what is happening, and what you're changing.
