Sorry if a stupid question... When you mention run on plates. Is this a plate directly joining the weld which you strike up on, and carry on welding onto the actual piece, and then cut off the sacrificial plate with a grinder once completed? Or are we talking a plate just to strike up on for a few seconds, then extinguish the rod, then re light on the actual piece to be welded?

you can do both if you want. I just srike the rod on the piece of metal I have bolted to the return clamp and instantly start the run while hot. if I wanted the weld to be perfect on start id just clamp a bit of metal on the beginning run along and cut the excess off leaving a full weld
