Heres some to wet your appetite, I had some links to realy old fashioned shops, cloth caps and all riding on the Sadle as it cut, giant old fashined stuff I must look and try and find them.

I don't know splatterer if you are a member of the excellent " practical machinist" forum, but there is an english gent on there called asquith who does a huge amount of research into old english engineering companies from times gone past , such as galloways of manchester, beardmore, armstrongs, whitworths etc. As i am sure you know these companies did work on the larger (bleedin massive) scale.

I seved my apprenticeship for a used machine tool dealer in Sheffield. We were based in what was the heavy machine shop of the Brightside Foundry and as a result of having 2x30 ton overhead cranes, we had some serious tackle pass through the doors. I ended my time with them driving the low-loader and the heaviest lathe I carried was a roll lathe. The headstock alone (without the chuck) weighed over 40 ton. The heaviest single machine we had was a Covmac 6" horizontal press that Pickfords delivered. All-up weight was approximately 130 tons.

A mate of mine worked for Head Wrightson here on Teesside many moons ago; he said they had a lathe with a 100 foot bed; he knew this because it was his job to sweep it
