Yes ok its going to take longer than stick or mig but if thats what youre wanting to do, then is up to you 
If you're going to be Tig welding thick butts, and large fillets (ie more than 3 passes stacked in properly) then one piece of advice, besides the "keep and eye on distortion" side of it, is.....
Dont try welding in huge thick runs (no matter what process you use) as youll simply saturate the steel and overheat it.
Buy some tempilsticks and keep a close eye on the interpass temperatures, a good starting point would be 150 degC. ie let the metal cool to under 150 before starting the next pass over it.
Will cause a few problems otherwise. Bit complicated to go into, i dont understand it fully myself, as am only a humble welder not a welding engineer
but is a starting point.
Applies even more so with other materials like stainless

As for the 6mm butt in the chart above, stating 180amps.... that may have been worked out to try and achieve a full penetration weld, without a prep. Ie just cleaned and butted right up together without a gap.
Believe me, thats not an easy thing to do and do a decent job of tbh, have tried lol.
Much better off, if welding from one side, putting a prep on each part, and tacking up with a gap. Then welding with a root pass, and then filling and capping it once cooled.
Is a much easier way to do it than trying to blast into it in one go.
