Get a mig gun and wire the switch to only power the feed motor, then have the gun in one hand and a torch in the other

Could that be related to what happened in the VW factory a few months ago, it was told to weave so it tried to leave but being bolted to the floor it couldn't so it killed the operatorI know it's all free hand mate. Even the robots would walk out if they were instructed to weave

I no..even walking up the shed this morning my right hand was weaving slightly. .spilt me tea too.so had to go refill. ..Morning Spencer

OK guys..I have managed to not weave.i. as hard as it is..and managed to do a sort of streight line with a dab of filler...early days but a point in the right direction. ...

No. Too much reinforcement can make for a weak joint in two respects really. The first is heat input in the same way a weave would effect the joint. The second is if you have excessive amounts of cap height or weld metal it can be a stress riser. Toes should blend nicely with the parent material and the width of the weld doesn't need to be any wider than what you've achieved to keep heat input down. It's a single pass butt joint so you need good fusion with both sides and no more. Penetration depth is much more important regarding strength of the weld than trying to increase the size of the face side.

To be critical the last 1/4 of the run there are 3 small points where it looks like the weld metal isn't fused properly to the parent. The rest looks good. It's no biggy when practicing but if that was under load it would fail in those points.

Evening all..
Well I didn't have such a good day today as burnt me finger..it happens once in a while..so I experimented with different things and came to conclusion.so correct me if I am wrong..on 3mm plate I set my machine on 80 amps..6 lpm on gas..and what I found was it takes about five seconds to form the puddle and is slow going which puts excessive amounts of heat in..so if I crank it up to about 100/110 amps it will puddle a lot quicker allowing me to speed up putting less heat in....

I no what you mean..for some strange reason I find it a bit easier at present to go quicker..I will have another go tomorrow. .when I get a feel for it all I can then progress. It's finding what works and what don't individually.Yep. If you up the juice and go quicker then heat input is overall less.
110 on 3mm seems v quick for me!

Today was a bit of a no go.with weaving my cup and a loss of tea this morning was a bad startI s'pose if you keep up with feed then no problem if the bead isn't nasty?
Like you say though, it's as much finding what works for you
