Tig Welding Vs Gas Welding?
How does Tig Welding compare with Gas Welding, I trained as a gas welder many years ago and new to Tig Welding, Are the techniques basically the same or are they completely different?

Gas welding is a good base skill to learn and will stand you in good stead for all manual welding processes, Tig technique is very similar to gas welding, arc instead of flame, shield provided by gas, and filler rod fed manually just as in gas welding,

If you gas weld you will pick up TIG very quickly.

That is interesting to know, because I have done quite a bit of gas welding.

Have to add though the techniques are not exactly the same, we find some of the hardest guys to train to TIG weld to coded standards are the ones that have a lot of gas welding experience as they automatically revert to gas welding mode when they stop concentrating on what they are doing

I gas welded a lot and found the techniques differ in the way the torch is manipulated but the rod side is very similar. Tig need a lot more coordination and concentration and keeping the torch on the weld till it cools takes a lot of remembering when you switch from gas to tig.

One of the main things people tend to do, is once they've fed the wire into the front edge of the weldpool they move the arc over the wire to melt it as you sometimes do with the gas flame.

Tig has the big difference that you want the filler rod coming in much shallower angles to the workpiece - makes some vertical/overhead positions very fun

As said above torch movement is different as sometimes with gas you may want to melt the rod so you put the flame over the rod, where with tig you can't do that(at least I can't:) you have to feed the rod into the arc. Back to the original question ''tig vs gas'' Gas is obvious better than tig for certain metals for example Copper braising or Copper to Brass or Copper to Steel, but tig is better I find for mild steel or stainless because you are doing it in an inert atmosphere. Of course you can gas weld all of these but the weld will be all dirty until you clean it up. As for alimunium I have only gas welded it so can not give any comparison.
Overall I think Tig is supieor if your not doing copper but then again I have gas welded all my life (and Mr.BOC has taken all my pocketmoney) and I prefer it it. (Gone off topic again) When ever I learn a new welding techinque I never compare it to anything else and I think in my opinion thats the best way to learn.(My opinion)

I finally found someone who likes gas welding. Most of the people I talk to say its a dead art.

I love a bit of gas welding but there is not a lot of call for it these days , cant remember the last time I used it to weld mild steel , do plenty of brazing and silver soldering though !

I never use it to weld mild steel only sheet because it is such a waste of heat for a tack weld

I used to pipe weld with oxy acetylene ! very hot work !

I was taught gas and arc at night school many years ago, certainly a good basis for Mig and Tig

me too tigman. Copper pipe for me though. Try filling a joint upside down!!!

I done all the positional stuff , we had to weld a 3 inch pipe 12 inches from the floor and 12 inches from the wall , very tricky !

Me too! Love gas welding as well. It is NOT a dead art, cannot be beaten, IMHO for car bodywork repairs where you are fabricating and welding sections into car wings etc.

Gas welding seems to be a dying art now a days I was lucky enough to be taught by an old hand at it he could weld aluminium with gas some thing I have never tried always tig`d alum

I work for the council (well tomorrow's my last day before I start as a welder!)

For the last 2 months I've watched the boilers in the council offices getting ripped out to be replaced, big chunks of lovely old plate stacked up in the car park.

The guys who are installing the new boilers are welding all the pipe with oxy/actylene and it's been a joy to watch in the car park when I pop in to the office. I got chatting to one of the blokes who gave me a tour of the boiler room

He's been welding pipe for 30 years and says oxy/acytlene's the way ahead, there's no flash to worry about with other contractors about and he can finish a joint just as fast as with a different process (and watching him work I can believe it)

Gas welding's not dead yet!
