TIG welds dull and grey in colour?

You can see from the shape of the weld bead you have put quite a lot of filler in these runs which has the effect of cooling the weld

Thank you for all the help and advice, guys, it is very much appreciated. I went over this evening to see Richard who gave me some excellent help and tutoring with my welding. Showed me the proper technique, corrected my torch angle and filler feeding method.

Was determined that my welds were suffering from a number of factors; slow travel speed (resulting in excessive heat), using too large a filler rod and too long an arc length.

A bit of guidance and practice and it all came together! Now i just need to carry on practicing and focus on keeping the arc length nice and short while keeping up travel speed.

Had a load of ally to hand, need to cut up more steel.

They did improve a little.

I need to keep my torch angle in check, getting better with arc length but as i move down the weld my torch angle gets steeper. I ran most of these at 200hz as it kept the arc much tighter, and machine set to sine wave.

Is the "crackle" finish on the welds down to technique or weld contamination? (Anodizing?)

Looking good, it seems a struggle at first with all the things you need to concentrate on but don’t worry it will all kick into place and become second nature with practice

It's getting easier, control/feeding the filler is what needs a bit more work too.

Need lots more practice on ally. Difficult material to work with!
