If the chrome starts cracking I normally give them a go over with a course wirebrush in the grinder to get rid of the chrome. The problem for me is impact sockets and bits are normally too bulky for most of the stuff I do. I've only had one major failure of a socket on an impact gun in 20 years, that was a 12mm deep snap on socket that violently broke into 3 pieces.

. Yes, I have the Myford book [who reads them, anyway ] and access to YouTube etc, and if I'd devoted just a little more time I'd have got it......but being Mr Impatient and a burgeoning list of things to make and do got in the way. 
Today I acquired....the ability to cut threads on a lathe!
I had a go on the Myford last year and although I was almost there, I never quite mastered it
Aaaaanyway, using his Colchester Student lathe, I successfully cut both external and internal threads !!
No pics, but now I know what I'm about I'll be having a go here when I get the shed re roofing job out of the way, a piston clock and two horseshoe crabs to be made for orders and sundry 'odd' jobs done, I'll be at it.
