Wasn’t the sail loft the longest/largest building in the world when it was built? I never went in there (Was on a Pompey based ship for nearly 5 years but spent 14 months in refit in Devonport ) but heard it was pretty impressive

Ahh, that would make more sense I had every chance to wander round at my leisure when I was younger and worked there, but had no interest Now I would kill for the chance but can’t get in

Yeah, not the same as being able to just have a wander round though! Whoever said youth is wasted on the young was definitely correct. I’d like to take a trip around if I’m down that way again. I’ve been on Victory and Warrior while I was still in but I’d quite like to have a gander round the rest.

We did a tour of some old engineering shops in Devonport when we went in to refit - loved seeing some of the old buildings and machinery.

I am not sure if it’s still available but the historic dockyard at Portsmouth used to do a annual ticket that allowed unlimited visits during a year. Ticket included access to all of the exhibits including Victory, Mary Rose,Warrior also included a water taxi and admission to the submarine museum, a water tour of the docks and a trip to the armourment museum.
if still available the annual ticket was very good value especially if purchased online in advance of visiting.

I hope it is. It was £15 for the year when I last bought one. You definitely need more than one weekend to the best from a visit.

The Full Navy Ticket is now £31 for an adult, £27.50 for concessions.

We got one last year as an offer coupon through Waitrose, really good deal, half price if I recall & then got a pensioners discount on top. Couldn’t beat it, went three times.

The rope walk in Pompy Royal Dockyard is the oldest still in commission making ropes for a commissioned ship.
HMS Victory.

The length of rope walks, of that age, was determined by the length of anchor rope a ship of the line needed to anchor.

Chatham Dockyard Rope walk and rope yard is not in royal commission, but still does make ropes for the RN.

HMS Victory Sail loft used to show a sail from her last battle. More holes than sail.

It was alleged in the American Civil war Armstrong (The gun makers) was selling ropes he "Acquired" from Old RN ships.
So they were not as good as they could be.

The term:
Money for old rope.

Comes from the days that RN ropes had a colours strip woven in.
This would be un-picked and the rope sold.
Normally the rope had bean condemned.
Hence the term.
