Good news.
One more steel and mixed ferrous melt last night.
Crucible was an old Steel CO2 extinguisher covered in some fire clay I begged from a metal place. Only 2kg, but enough for me

Left blob is almost pure steel, some inclusions it collected as it flowed from the pot belly stove. Yes the one I posted about finding in a bush early this year.



But, yes to maintain the heat the fan was held a bit close to the mouth of the stove, see the results.
But with help of a welding mask you can see the white hot metal form and flow from the side hole of the crucible.

The pot belly stove is lined with clay dug from neighbours garden. It works, but I do need to:

A. Spend money and it proper.
B. Stop drinking beer and having ideas.
C. Stop collecting stuff.

But as this was an idea I had when I was of sick, I think for the outlay of £0.00p I did well.

Actually yesterday but a hitachi sds hammer drill and a bullfinch gas furnace, 6 gas masks and 3 110v work lights

The gas masks are ear marked for a theatrical thing and the work lights may have been a mistake but got the lot for 91 quid including charges and 70 ish of that was the hammer drill

The furnace is nearly new and 130 new and the drill has a knackered battery but came with 2 so one is all good.

You do know that molten aluminium dissolves iron? Might explain why you're burning through your steel crucibles.

I've not aquired it yet, but unless I'm putting a curse on it, I might have got a power hammer...

It's a bit rough, home made and missing a few bits, but nothing insurmountable. (It may need a little reworking to quieten it down a bit...) but quite cheap. Any idea what size of motor one o these needs?

I used to use them at work many moons ago for crimping insulation displacement connectors onto ribbon cable, the parallel jaws make it a doddle

After watching a recent @doubleboost production where he included a welding clip comparing the new R-Tech Automatic True Colour HD Welding Helmet I was so impressed I went and bought one. It turned up yesterday and used it tonight for about 3 hours and I am.super impressed. View of what you are doing is so much clearer, mate of mine had a go and he now wants one
