Got these quilted canvas overalls today, you can lay in mud with these and not get wet , the last ones I had lasted over ten years. A friend brought them back from Urmerika for me

I thought of these overalls today. I was under my van mucking about with the exhaust, laying near, but not on the foam mat and in a small stream from where where a complex series of gulleys and drains carried the rain off the van and aranged it is such a way that I got a wet backside for my troubles.

Tbh they don't look that greasy... though maybe I'm just battle-hardened, this is what I consider greasy (or maybe this is just 'never cleaned')

Believe me, my wife would class them as greasy.

I would class them as greasy just to be on the safe side when white painted surfaces are concerned.

Finally got around to gathering up my stilsons to take a picture.

4x16", 1x14", 2x12", 3x10" & 2x8", mostly records.
All have been bought 2nd hand apart from the 10" one in the middle. My dad bought that new over 40 years ago & it lived most of its life on our various tractors. In fact it, a larger one & an adjustable spanner were the only spanners around until I started building up my own tool kit!

Over those years it has acquired a lovely patina, the handle is polished smooth but the teeth on the jaws are still perfect! My Dad calls it 'the wee blue stilson' & it's still the first one we lift when we need to do any plumbing. Understandably this is a treasured possession, hopefully I can pass it down to the next generation some day.

Today I got this lovely mattock head for $20, it looked 'right' to me on the listing that it might be a good one, and I was right - 4.5lb A&F Parkes of Birmingham, though I weighed it and it came up just under 4lb, by the looks of it it's one of their early ones, I imagine pre-war.

I also got this Hardypick auger, made in Sheffield a few weeks ago but I don't think I posted it on here, $15. Again this is from the period 1910-30. Makeshift handle on it and we're away digging holes. Couldn't find a mug so you'll have to settle with a bottle of meths for scale.

They are for holding down the base and posts of a tennis net. Have a look for the rest of the kit (two ornate cast iron baseplates and the two wooden posts) as they are very sellable (and very easy to restore). There is a U-shaped groove in the base that sits under the knob on the auger. Search 'tennis net cast' and look at the images.

I got a new tic in my hospitals visited today.

I was on q site talking to the head maintenance guy, I was looking at him.
I missed the step.

Gravity is law no one can break.

I did not break the law.

I am big and old.

I did not bounce.

I acquired a cut on the head. Hay Super glue works. But hurts.

Busted 3 ribs.

And a thick lip.


I am home, I am feeling happy, I have a beer. When happy goes home I will feel sleepy.

Got a small pillar drill a few months back... "ooo that's useful"

So I got a much bigger pillar drill a few months later, "gosh we like this !"

Went to buy a slide vice for £25 of a local, and ended up spending a wee bit more on an even bigger drill (and mill) that was looking for a home



Most expensive vice I have ever bought! BUT the gentleman made clocks... and had this from new

Today I was given (!) a Brades 8oz ball pein hammer. As TYA suggests, gain a reputation for being someone who fishes things out of skips, restores things and prioritises spending money on old tools, and people will start to take note!

I felt a bit bad as they said it's got a lovely handle, and tbh it did have a lovely handle, until some idiot had managed to smack it just under the neck so that about a third was cracked off. I don't like a loose hammer head, so I sawed it off. Gave it to a friend who likes wood turning though. A nice piece of English Ash is rare down here.

On the way out of uni saw them breaking up all the old furniture of the year (happens every year). They can't sell it by some contractual agreement so they have to break it up. Saw some lovely steel tables, 50mm box legs, sturdy as hell, getting taken to bits and chucked in the skip. Sad times. Last year I stole two 15 drawer filing cabinets from the same operation before they met their fate. To this day I am amazed that I ran up to my studio carrying them because they're not light!

Legal crap. It's theft if you take it apparently - I like to live dangerously

I should have taken a photo of hundreds of office chairs lined up waiting for the skip to arrive. Steel lockers, shelves, cupboards all get bashed up, flattened and hiffed in the scrap skip. It's proper good kit too. You're spot on, proper depressing!
