Today I acquired...........

got this, in exchange, for a bottle of ,Glenlivet Malt Whisky. First spotted it outside a farmer's workshop, ages ago, but only got a chance to ask about it this week. Although, it has been outside in all weathers, for several years it is still free and not seized solid. Will strip and clean it up. The handle must have a slight bend as it just catches , the back of the frame, when turning. Not sure if part of it has been cut off the front, at sometime? Just need to get some tooling now.

Pretty common for the handles to be bent in as when they are put or laid onto there backs the bar takes the strain..should be 90 degrees and pointing straight down..easily bent back out

Looks like the support leg was chopped off in the initial picture. Can see where the casting started to form the leg.

They seem to keep changing things ad-hoc, I think they're just trying to frighten people into seeing out their notice period.

There are very strict procedures and specific legislation which an employer must follow when both announcing and setting out the terms of an impending redundancy.

If applicable, your union rep or local representative will be able to obtain the relevant guidelines to at least understand the terms the employer must adhere to.

This even covers, for example, the basis on which they have given notice, made their selection of personnel and therefore which employees are ‘at risk’. Likewise, the way in which they handle or give out advise relating to your pension.

If your considering putting yourself up for VR (as you indicated in an earlier post) and really don’t have a problem with taking it, don’t forget that your pension contributions will stop and thus the long term growth of your ‘pot’ will be affected and therefore ultimately, your final pensionable salary. However, the scheme may allow you to continue making contributions (if you can afford to do so) to partially offset this.

I know full well that it’s easy to make sweeping statements such as ‘I don’t want to work nights any more’ and ‘looking for a complete change’ but if you truly are perhaps the most proficient engineer in your department, there might also be some resistance on the part of the company to release you. So think carefully before taking the knee-jerk reaction and putting yourself into a difficult financial corner that probably wasn’t part of your near term plan.

If the same situation came along in say 5 years time, when your approaching your late fifties, you’ll have had 5 more years to save at your current salary level, which due to your mortgage free status, will help you build up a financial buffer or max out the payments into your pension scheme.

As you’ve already commented, getting impartial advice from an IFA (independent financial advisor) is very important, so at the very least, start the ball rolling by asking the company for a pension statement, including a transfer value. They may refer you to a third party who act as the scheme administrators, chase them down for the info in readiness to talking to an IFA. You should already have details of the scheme itself so get all the paperwork ready in advance.

It may be that your already aware of the above and have taken steps to act accordingly, for which I apologise, but having been through 2 redundancies in the past 15 years, the most recent of which was 4 years ago, I can offer some feedback on the thought processes and anguish you are experiencing. You have my deepest sympathy - I wouldn’t wish this situation on anyone.

On getting home a lot later at 6pm I seen this precision tool nicely turn to exact measurements ideal for sorting my son bike i was expecting a piece of steel tube

I wouldn’t say precision, as the only dimension that was measured was the 30mm one. But it was done to say thanks for the cat5 cable I had from you before. I also couldn’t find any 30mm od steel tube all I had was 27 & 34 mm

Ha, I wish I was the most proficient engineer but alas, no, I’m just a shop floor grunt, albeit one who knows almost every job in my area.

th e guy , I got it from, said that it came out of an old sawmill, where it was used for doing something to saw blades. It would make sense ,that leg has been cut off to allow access for a big circular blade. Possibly to straighten or set teeth ? Don't know anything about circular bench saws, apart from, they scare me!

Back in the day when wallpaper had a "Blank edge" or wastage line on both sides of the roll.

This was to prevent a whole roll being wasted or written off if the ends were damaged.

I miss my boat. Wasn't practical to bring it here across the pond, would be difficult to get parts if needed, and be too loud for inland waters.
We do have an old 10' Avon, but the trolling motor didn't get packed in the sea train container.
