It is indeed the "farmy" one, owned by the same folk who own Tebay services on the M6 up in the Lakes.

Even though they're definitely better than most other MSA's, I wouldn't normally stop here, but there's no way I can get into the site tonight. Tea is cooking and I've got 150 channels on telly, so this will do for the night.

I never knew they had another - thought that one was a one-off.
I thought you'd somehow spelt Torbay (some place in Devon) wrongly at first - had to look it up.

Might have to sample it on my next visit to the Freeman in Newcastle.

I'd assumed they were all "much of a much-ness", until I found myself in the Gloucester one.

I'm not too sure I'd even venture out of the cab - it sounds a better set-up than where I live!

Bought as opposed acquired; but have coming a diamond cut off wheel for my angle grinder from Lenox. Hoping it'll make quicker work of cutting down the 5mm plate I have on the welding table.

Now I just need the weather to improve a little.

The northbound service area is between junctions 38 and 39, so if you're heading to Newcastle you could call in, then head up to 39 and turn back south, leave at 38 and take the A685 to Brough, via Kirkby Stephen, then A66 east to Scotch Corner and A1M north to "Why-aye" land.

Epic scenery, and while it's not as easy as the M5, M42, M1, and A1M, the scenery makes up for it. And without meaning to be nosey, if you're having treatment at the Freeman, try that journey on the way home to give you a bit of a lift. I admit to being a bit biased with my love of the area, the A66 over Stainmore is equal top in my list of favourite roads/scenery, along with the A628 Woodhead Pass, Sheffield to Manchester road. Even though they both have major Trans-Peninne roads cutting through them, I love these desolate high moorland regions.

Edit: And if it's at the weekend, I live on the edge of Weardale, the kettle is always on and the fire is always lit, so you're more than welcome to call in for a pot of tea.

Still have mine, its a longtime since its seen any action. I bought a Barnet slingshot when I was about 14, didnt touch the Milbro after that. And my thumb was very happy

I always had a samll model Milbro as a kid but made the mistake of putting my thumb where it;s supposed to go and every other shot hit the darned thing, I threw that thing away so mamny times!!

No idea what happened to it, Must have gotten fed up with retrieving it so left it where it landed eventually!

I bought these thre from a local bootsale, Outer two are both old Milbro's, Right one is a Magapult!

Middle one is a Warden, Made by the same company that produced the Gat guns! (T J Harrington), It's quite rare from what I can gather!, They all need new 1/4" rubber!!

I did a trade on facey with a lad for this 10mmx5 lead ball mould, It's fab but I wish the sprues were 1/8" loger as a chunk of the ball disappears when cropping it, I think the slope of the sprue pushes the cutting edges in (Needs a round cutter to avoid it!)

Some naturals that I made after lopping the hazel hedge that had shot up way high!!

That's quite wierd to read, but it's almost like you've seen me drive there the last few hundred times - just like you say,

M5, M42, M1, and A1M,

But you're quite ovbiously a proper trucker, so I shouldn't be too surprised, I suppose.

Went on a "childhood memory" detour after one of the Freeman sessions a while back - all the way to DG9 9NG all along the A69, then A75 - it's strange going back there - almost as if nothing has changed at all, the closer you get!

I expect I'll be back up there, next month (almost certain, as I'm running low on meds), so will try to call by - you definitely live in a beautiful part of the world, there!

I suspect I've been quite close by a few times - nosing aroud in the Hadrians wall area, and getting generally lost.
Your neck of the woods was the first area (apart from an aborted trip to Whitley Bay!) that I got to go out to after being stuck on an oxygen cylinder for six to seven years - it was almost like being outside for the first time - except that this time I was no longer a kid - I was old!

Dumping the cylinder was such a novelty, back then!

But that cuppa does sound very tempting - and if I make it up there, I'll be sure to PM you in advance.
I daresay you'll be down this end of the country - but you never know!

The company was called "Sheldon Bush", and iirc, molten lead was poured through mesh screens in a tower which is apparently still there, and the height it was poured from dictated the diameter. Don't know if the company is still in existence, but it was an interesting job. And didn't Gamebore in Hull use the same process?

When I worked years ago for a builders merchant, we used to buy lead sheet from Sheldon Bush. I have it in my mind that the shot Tower was listed some years ago.

Can still see the tower on google earth, but I presume the lead works has long gone? Even though I was a 20 year old apprentice, 35 years ago , I can vividly remember our wagon driver, Alan Skidmore, (I kid you not) struggling to make a hard turn out of the works onto a cobbled street with the big artic lowloader that I ended up driving years later. We threw a couple of big tubs of Swarfega all over the cobbles and the wagon slid round a treat, but then it rained...Looking on street view, Cheese Lane seems to fit that location.

We installed a Brightside 2-high mill that replaced an antiquated Robertson mill. Interestingly, my old firm of machine tool dealers, Devonshire Engineering, were based in my old village of Ecclesfield in what had previously been the heavy machine shop of Brightside Foundry of Sheffield who made the mill that we installed. Don't know how true the stories were, but the drive unit for their old mill was supposedly from a WW2 MTB, and one of the workers with a grudge threw a 1" bolt into the gear train, which caused major damage. Apparently he tried the same trick with the Brightside mill, which chewed it up and spat it back out without batting an eyelid.

More memories of good times past, including 5 of us walking over the Clifton Bridge one evening and finding a nut, something in the region of 3" diameter, that hadn't been tightened properly. We were somewhat less than complimentary about the sainted Mr Brunel that night .

In the English Civil War, both forces would set up a "production line" in making shot.
The towns in the SW were lead was mined and the areas in the North as well, were prized areas to get hold off.
King Charles did write a letter to the Lead Miners of the Forrest of Dean admiring their work.
Shame he didn't pay up.,

Got this lot today for the princely sum of £20. The standard bars are 2", 3", 25mm and 50mm. I wasn't sure what the micrometer head was used for but figured it would be useful, and couldn't go wrong for mitutoyo at that price. The hss blanks are probably a bit oversize for my drummond, but I can either cut them down or I have a set of plans for how to build a small hand shaper they could be used for.
