Toilet problems (Not that sort)

Picked up a new inlet valve today. There's two screws in the bottom of the cistern blasthered up with sealant and nothing else ofther than the screws in the pan to the floor and the (one) screw into the wall.

What next?.. Empty cistern and mop out then lift up? Will there be slack on the inlet to lift it?

The last one I worked on like that, I had to remove the whole pan & cistern as 1 unit, then hold the 2 screws/bolts at the bottom of the cistern while I removed the nuts from below (they are hidden when the toilet is in place) before I could get access to swap out the internals. If you try to undo the screws as it is - best case is the hidden nuts become loose and you can't reach them to tighten them up again
They look nice but can be hard work for maintenance

Edit: the feed is often a flexi pipe with some slack so you can move the pan off the wall, you need to see if the soilpipe goes down or into the wall so you pull the cistern in the right direction (up or forward).

Nothing seems to last!

Had to replace a couple of seals on toilets in my last place. Both failed at pretty much the same time. Anyone would think these manufacturers make them to last for x amount of time

It seems the modern day manufacturing mantra is...………. there is no profit in making things to last, only in repeat business.

as someone who does this sort of s41t for a living, replace with a fluid master as suggested near the beginning of the thread it'll save having to go back out and get one when the torbeck valve your trying to fix crumbles or, new diaphragm doesn't work or the connection cross threads on the inlet.

I had this last year, ended up replacing the fill mechanism, then the flush.

Would've been cheaper to buy a new complete loo.

Only the Victorian thing outside will actually flush "a full No2" away in a oner!

I used to load modular buildings from a firm in Hull and the advisory notice on their bog wall read "Anything heavier than 2lb must be lowered by a rope." .

Welderpaul, it can be a surprisingly complicated affair, or rather there are different scenarios depending on how the soil pipe is connected and what type of service valve is on the supply.

Basiically there will be a couple of thumb nuts on those screws holding cistern on the pan. Un doing them may release the water in the cistern so use a sponge to bail it out first.

Another one for the oracle!

The bog fills up when it is flushed but then keeps hissing at a high pitch as water is still passing through the little inlet next to the nut where my finger is. Had a fiddle and there is nothing blocking it etc.

Its all fantastic plastic so it might be easier to replace the guts unless someone can point me in the direction of what might be the problem.

Also seem to have a pipe clip instead of a washer.

This sounds just like the problem I had with mine recently, turn off the water and undo that nut first, there could be a tiny split in the rubber washer.

It looks like you will need to unscrew from floor then move forward to get to the underside of the cistern. I assume the soil pipe will be on a flexi. I purposely avoided the same style pan as yours due to the pipes being inaccessible when up against the wall.

like you say a pain in the butt and have to be unscrewed from floor and pulled forward to do repair just hope it and the doughnut and waste dont leak when you put it back in

Yeah, ours looks the same set up as yours but no access to make the connections in situ from behind the pot. It must all be assembled and connected a few inches away from the wall then shoved back into place and fixed.

My missus wanted the same as yours but we had to go for one with a gap at the back due to the soil pipe needing to exit to the right rather than straight back. I must admit though the style you have is nice and neat but obviously a pain in @rse when it comes to maintenance.

correct when i did my daughters bathroom out the plumber changed the boiler and i asked him to fit the new bog .wont say what he called me when he fit it

Ah so it were the same problem that I had,.....I did wonder why some were talking about separating the two halves of the toilet in the first place.

Easy to get to that washer, just undo that nut hey.

Ive never successfully repaired a cheap plastic fill valve, I have a box with around 50 different washers and diaphragms, even if the correct one is in there it often doesn't work or even worse, doesn't last.

Quicker to swap for a decent valve

Agreed. I would normally swop the whole thing but it would have meant dismantling half the bathroom to get at it.
This is the one that fitted ours.
