tom senior vs milling machine.

i am going to buy a tom senior vs model milling machine next week sometime , a friend of a friend has it and is selling it on. anyone have any experience with this make of machine or this model in particular ? the reason i want this machine is my shed space is tiny and this would fit nicely , it appears to be a horizontal machine but it does come with a vertical attachment , so it should be versatile. the price for the senior is less than i can get a chinese bench top machine for.

any opinions ?

Got one at work and it a great little machine. Only down side is the limited high on the table especially when using a vice.

snap his hand off, they're much sought after in the model engineering world, well made & quite robust,they were aimed at education hence well made & long lasting

Would be very surprised you will find any spares. But unless you do something stupid you wont need any the only things I could see going would be drive belts and they will be standards

the machine was taken as a trade in off a bridgeport, the rust i am assured is very light as the machine has been sitting for about 4 months, no marks on the table (has to be a good sign), i'll post better pics when i get them.

That's identical to the one at work apart from ours has some stupid HSE advised guards that normally get I the way so spend most of there life of the floor!

looks good,the only thing I can't see is the arbour, usually 1" dia,might be worth checking if it's there, overarm & outer fitting there.

yes one is included , i just forgot to post the piccy, how does build quality etc rate with the more modern stuff ? would anyone have any idea of the age of these machines ? 50's , 60's ?

If its old and English then the build quality will be second to none, lightyears better than cheap chinese crap.

The one at work has been there since the arc was commissioned! some time in the 60's at a guess. Still nice and accurate but in fairness ours will have not had a very busy life. Only downside is its all in inches but as the digi vernier I have will do both I just work in inch on it

I think from the limited amount i have read , that most of these mills were in schools or colleges rather than industry, or if they were in industry then it was at the light end of engineering work.

Definately more robust than any ****** crap, we had one at work a bit older than that.

Speeds with the vertical attachement will be slow and very limited.

Its got the horizontal arbour has it got the horizontal fitting with nuts and shims etc?

just whats in the pictures as far as i know hareng , i won't be doing anything very large or heavy cuts with the vertical head, bike bits and small model making hopefully.
