Tool/air tools for a 170 ft/lb nut??

Hi folks, I'm not a hugely regular member or poster but I've a question which I hope you can help me with as I've no idea!

I need to loosen a 55mm nut which is torqued to 170ft/lbs but will just need to do this in my garage so portability isn't an issue.
I know an AIR impact wrench is the obvious answer but I only have a small 50L Sealey compressor SA5020 which only has about a 5 CFM rating I just don't know if it's up to the job so would a corded (say 1000W) electric wrench be s better choice?

If air tool is the way to go can someone please point me in the direction of what to buy that won't cost the earth for occasional use (I'm in the UK). There are single & double hammer versions out there & ive heard you kinda get what you pay for where these are concerned with the Ingersol Rand brand being favoured by a few.

Do you need to use air, can you crack with a bar then run nut off with any tool. Or is this on something you can not hold still do use a bar and socket?

Not on the back end of a Transit is it?

If so, breaker bar and a "scaff" pole will do it.

Thanks for the replies guys, didn't get mail notification.

It's the rear wheel retainer nut on a motorcycle & needs to be s 1 person job as I've a house full of girls!
If 1 person tries it the bike would tip over with the force required to loosen or tighten & not everyone is here all the time to hold the bike & stand on the rear brake.

Thing is I'm v confused at all the lies told to get the top figures, I just need to know what's honest!, I've a 14.4Vcordless & it's a POS, totally useless for anything you'd actually need it for.

The front sprocket nut on my bike is 145Nm and my Clarke 24V impact wrench shifts it no problems, if you plan to get one, keep an eye out for the VAT free offers, someone usually posts a spare one on here.

Thank you! Yup, they go on tight!! Couldn't believe when I read 170 ft/lb for a rear wheel nut!!
How much should I expect to pay for one?

Vat free already! Lol. Bit worried about the 220nm max torque though. Heard reports of 2 times that but wouldn't remove 150ft/lb nuts

I'd hate to go to that expense & find it didn't work though

Yes I probably will, but calling outs once is much better than twice! Lol

Fair point, just thought I'd mention it!!

Do you have any modernish li-on cordless tools - you may be able to get a bare driver (nonbatteries) with enough torque to shift the nut? Milwaukee do one with big numbers but you can get heavy duty ones from all the usual manufacturers.

What's the issue with just using a large torque wrench?

Always used one on my bikes with no issue. Go to a track day and you won't see anyone using power tools or a windy gun to do the job.

I've got a pair of the corded Clarke ones. Think they claim to be 450nm or something but they are brilliant. Only about £50 on vat free. Can't rate them enough.

Back in the 80’s, when Snap On dealers were good and looked after their customers. Like go to their homes to resolve issues.

I was working on my Beetle, 1972 1300 rust bucket. I had to remove the 36mm nut from the back end. I broke:

1 X 36mm socket, Halfords own.

1 X 36” long Knuckle bar, local spares place, CK make I believe.


So I saved up and invested in a Snap On bar and socket, a big investment for me at the time.

I broke it.

Mr Snap On man arrived, looked at the damage and replaced them. Asked what we were doing, we told him. He said he will be back latter in the day with a tool to help.

He did, he arrived gone 18:00, with a socket welded onto a 6’ metal tube, between us we cracked the 2 nuts.

As I said back in days of myth and legends.

I've got one of those SO bars - 1m long I think? Bought it for a particular job but ended up sourcing new hub carriers because of other issues so never used it.

I see you're SW way - a couple of the dealers round here are top chaps.

Oh yes, we are wells served for tool dealers. Sadly my local SO dealer only deals with sites he can always sell at. will not go to some sites. he has bean "Called out" on replacing failed tools.
He certainly will not deal with any one with out a business he can visit. He also will not deal with any one who finds him on a site and try's to deal with him.

It is one reason That Mac and a few independent suppliers took off.

Guys, it's 170 ft/lbs. What's all the fuss about? A 24" wrench or bar will require 85lbs of downward force to loosen or tighten the nut. That's less than 37Kgs, my nine year old daughter could do it.

Matt, I appreciate how easy this may seem in your head & appreciate the advice but i'd rather have a tool that will do the job than a £13K Ducati on the floor. My thoughts are that if i need the wheel off then it can be a 1 man job, when refitting i can torque it up to what i can without knocking the bike over then get help, my wife isn't always around when i am & a 3 & 6 year old probably aren't going to be much use at it.

Yes, granted on track days you may not see any windy guns but pretty much anyone is willing to lend a hand out being a common interest, i know because i used to do them, only sold my bike at the start of this year
