That's not good (for me that's is) lol

When I have purchased these I have found they are not great quality......so i was hoping for a link to good value ones. lol

These are hafele ones (£££) - really good quality - with a rubber thing on the back so they have a soft lock.
I also got some "push to unlock" ones, but are too long for this project.

To be honest Ebay has been ruined by them allowing prices FROM.......

If you search lowest price plus postage you more often than not get some really cheap item listed (not the one you searched for) and it's made the search function next to useless.

You can put in a minimum price to search above???

This tool chest has become my new obsession. I have a couple of sheets of cheap ply and drawer runners on order to have a go at making a prototype.
THERE ARE GOING TO BE TOOL CHESTS EVERYWHERE by the time I'm done (probably of varying quality). The dog treats are going to be so well organised

To use cheap ply, get a tub of this cheap filler from screwfix.
Spread it across the board and sand smooth.
It'll look much better when painted.

And don't scrimp on the ply thickness! The sides of both the case and the drawers need to be 18mm ideally. The slides take a lot of weight, and 9mm ply won't hold the screws.

Thanks! I amended my order to 18mm.
Does the same hold true for Buffalo board: 18mm thick?

12mm would probably be ok in buffalo board.
I used 9mm for the outer case sides, and its not too bad, but i wish id gone thicker

i bought a pair of full extension ones from here
for a shelf for large socket set to sit on and it goes under worktop

You could always just fasten lengths of 25x25x3mm angle for the drawer boxes to slide on...

I did this on a cabinet a long time ago, and it works quite well, but if you have a lot of weight in the drawers then they tend to be difficult to pull out.

However, for a cheap and simple solution it's definitely a good idea

Big egg, if you want to cover sliders at front cut up some ali,or stainless?, and make to right size and glue on.

I had a couple of these handles for my tap and die sets, they fold almost flat. Also noticed that there are runners on bed drawers.

I can often get used drawer runners, filing cabinets, and office furniture if anyone wants any. The steel A4 drawer cabinets are quite rare though, if I do get offered any I always have them.

How are you making the drawers, is it carpentry witchcraft like dovetails or have you just screwed into the edge of the boards? I fancy copying this as I'm too stingy to buy another decent chest and the cheap ones are too bendy for my taste.

Screwed+glued. (I used a kreg pocket hole jig, but I don't think it's neccessary, just tidier.)
The bottoms are just glued and screwed through into bottom of drawer sides, front and back (1inch screws, pilot hole/countersunk)

Mk2 will use dowels to join the corners since I just bought a "joint genie" dowel jig.

Personally, even without the dowel jig, I think dowelling works better on plywood (got to be 15mm + tho, won't work on thinner).
Screwing within 6 inches of a corner into the edges of plywood - even phenolic - can split the plies apart. If you drill a pilot hole big enough to prevent it, the screws won't grip.
With dowels, even on the 2" drawers - drill a couple of 8mm, 30mm deep, holes through the sides into the edges of the front/back and glue in 8x30 dowels. Makes a perfectly strong joint.

There's a test somewhere on you-tube that rates a two-dowel PVA glued joint in 3/4" ply at 650lbs breaking load. ("and a grizzly bear only weighs 600lbs")

Buffalo board.....great stuff but as said 'kin heavy. I've abandoned this tote I made for my plumbing gear and gone over to a bag:

Nice tool chest....my work bench has wide drawers made from ply and angle iron. I used the "heavy duty" runners from fleabay but to be honest they have been nothing but hassle and I need to replace them.

I got the full extension ones....but with too much weight the rails twist and all the bearings fall out. Maybe if I double them it might help...
