Older versions of cura are still available. Ive just installed version 4.10.0 on a win 7 system without problems


There is a dll file that's missing as I tried to install 5.5.0 on the same system.

I've installed 4.1 and it opens/runs fine but see above, the gcode files it produces won't run my printer.

Another option is I could try a different slicer program.
Anyone know of something with lots of tweeking options that runs on win 8?

How do you normally set up the slicer software to work with a specific printer if your printer is not in the instalation list?

In 4.10.0 in the preferences menu, configure cura. Then printers, select the printer you specified at the first start of cura. Select machine settings and check that the options there match the printer you have. There is an option to change the g code flavor to match the firmware on the printer itself. I havent tried to print with it as I've only just installed it

You can select a custom printer if yours isnt listed and change the settings in the machine settings for bed size, heated bed and number of extruders etc.

So you don't need a driver then (like you would for an ink jet printer)?
Just tell cura what gcode the printer uses and that should be enough?

Looking in (the working) v15 it's set to
"RepRap (marlin/sprinter)"

In v4 I can see separate selections for Marlin
Marlin (Volumetric)
RepRap

It's currently set to RepRap.
I'll try the marlin ones...

The laptop is win 8.1. 64 bit.
Any of the 5.x versions i tried did actually install with no issues but when i try to open them it told me some component could not be found (not open gl).
A quick google suggested that was because the os was not supported so I just tried 4.x and that worked fine.

Well, worked as in it opens and runs.
The gcode it produces won't actually make the printer work hence I think I need to extract the settings from my v15 and import them into a newer version somehow.

I could install 5.5 one a different/newer pc and just use an sd card to take it to the printer..

Ah OK so you got the other problem that I kept getting when I was trying the newer versions on Windows 7.
I felt I was running up my own backside until I found the message that gaz1 posted. I think that was that 5 and over needs open gl2.0 but I also got a.dll issue.
I tried that many versions I don't have a clue how to solve it but the upshot was I finally managed to get 5 installed by forcing the laptop into high performance mode.

5.4.0 installed without a problem on w8/64 but I get a dll load failed when I try to open it


The laptop is not connected to the Internet so its a faff to try and download whatever I need to fix that and move it over on a usb stick etc..
v4 seems to have loads more settings than the v15 I was using if i can actuallyget v4 to print something.
Then I could have a read through the change log to see if there are any good reasons to spend the time getting v5 to run...

I don't use it much to alter settings but it's a lot about supports in the newer version.

I did try octoprint when I got the printer but it kept on timing out and stopped the printer mid print so now I only print from an sd card as the printer is in a different room to my pc. I’ve never connected the printer directly to a pc but if you do you would require the correct driver for it

It's currently set to RepRap.
I'll try the marlin ones...

My printer uses marlin and when it boots it displays what version it has on it. When I got it it was not marlin but as I use a sd card the printer reads the g code from there. You do need to make sure the print volume details in cura are correct as any errors there can cause printing issues

What make/model is your printer?

It’s a tevo tarantula with a different motherboard and stepper drivers as initially it was noisy, that’s why it’s in a different room to the pc. As it is now the noisiest thing is the power supply fan

Did a bit more messing last night,
Looks like the latest version of 4 will run on (my) win8.
The first and the last version of 5 won't.
This is what ultimaker state on the website anyway.

I'll transfer my settings into the latest 4 and see if I can get it to print something.

I did have a quick read through the build versions and I don't think I'm missing may options (that I would use) by not having 5.x.x

I have noticed the latest version does something strange
If skirt is selected, it does a skirt, then part of the first layer and returns and does another skirt pass

I tried tpu for the first time today. It ended in disaster! I need to do more research and mess with the settings more.

30mm / second print speed max, 228C and cold platter. The slicer should have those defaults in its tables if using Cura 5.0 or similar.

I am using prusa as my laptop won't run cura. I did use the settings from their default but it ran at 40mm/s and 220C.
