Tractor oil leak probloems.

Just getting the old international ready to do a bit fenceing and noticed a trail of engine oil behind it

On investigation it running from the crank case breather tube that is mounted to the cam cover on the side of the block and is only blowing the oil out when revved. It's fitted with a Perkins D3.179 engine.

Before I start over thinking things what could be the potential causes?

trouble with tractors are they are gravity fed so diaphram is pressured all the time.

Just looked, I'm not getting any blow back from the dip stick tube, I'm going to take the breather off for a look.

thats unusual what model
fuel contaminated oil can still cause it to leak from breathers coz it too thin.

The breather didn't appear to be blocked, there wasn't loads of sludge inside or any thing.

It only runs out on full throttle, but it runs like a tap.

I might try changing the oil what grade should I stick in an old knakered tractor?

Plastic hose back to filler cap that will keep it runnin

Unless it has a conversion it should have the International 3 pot diesel engine which is a D179. As in above posts it could be excessive blowby but could also be a blocked breather pipe thats attached to the filler tube on the rocker cover.

Yeah it's a D179 but there's no breather on the valve cover:

From a chair its hard to say exactly whats wrong with it but it would appear to be crankcase pressure/ blow by , a lot of these tractors dont get worked hard enough and will glaze up the bores. Long periods at tickover and just pottering about can cause this, loads of "cures" on the market that are supposed to work ranging from glaze busting oils to Vim but never tried them.

To be honest your probably right it never dose mutch but it dose my job.

It's a funny old contraption, it's a international 248 industrial tractor. It has a massive loader on for its size and orriginally came with a compressor on the back and no 3 point hitch, I took the compressor off and fitted a 3 point hitch.

It's perfect for me as it will lift 1 ton on the loader and I can also use it as a farm tractor, it's also small enough to manuver around my small yard.

But I have a couple of hundred fence posts to knock in so it's going to get grafted.

The strange thing is if I remove the dipstick I don't feel any back pressure.

Well I feel like a complete dip stick now..

Just dropped the oil out of the old tractor and approx 3 gallon came out , re filled with 6.3l of 20w/50 and all is good

I've now modified the dipstick so that it reads correctly, shouldn't have this problem again.

Did your tractor come from R Cripps at Aycliffe? if so there is a damn good chance that I fitted the loader and compressor and did the PDI on that tractor as all the IH industrials that Cripps sold were shipped through the Melton Mowbray depot up until 1984

i got it from from a Tarmac company someware up Newcastle, but that's as mutch as I know. it's entirely possible it came from Cripps.

yes, the tarmac ones went through Cripps. has it got an Alo Quike loader on it?

No I believe the loader is an international one as the front axle is mounted to the loader not the engine and the loader frame runs under the cab and is mounted to the trumpets on the back axle.
