I've known those German IH engines (both the 3 & 4 cylinder ones) to suffer from coolant cavitation round the bottom of the liners due to vibration. Always seemed to be tractors that spent a lot of time idling/pootling about on the road that suffered most from it. I've seen them bore the nearest wee holes through the liner allowing the coolant to run into the sump. Often misdiagnosed as a blown head gasket.
