A lot of welders/fabricators are out of their comfort zone when they cant roll the workpiece about on a bench.

welding on a bench in a well lit room on a test piece is lovely, but welding a structural plate while hanging off ladders in summer heat is a deferent ball game! Hood time is the only way IMO

I find with apprentices/new weldors, the first thing they need to know is how it SHOULD look. Second thing they need to know is how it SHOULDN'T look, and why it looks like that.

Nothing worse than seeing a whole load of splatters on good material and someone thinking that it's ok.

If these tools help avoid even 25% of practice material waste it's probably a good thing. Material isn't cheap these days, especially when you get up to 12mm and 20mm test pieces.

Some really massive test plates at local college some was 10mm thick plate and seemed a massive bit for one little V stringer

I’ve got to agree with Jim; he’s made some great points. I’ve had some hands on time with virtual welding systems and whilst they do not feel like the real thing, they do help provide the gist of consistent travel speed, arc distance etc.. which are very, very important aspects of welding. The cost efficiency of them for colleges (in the long run) is also impossible to ignore.

i think hse man would chase you off the park , imagine a big blobber in your welly its a pain vs complete the run without doing a fred astaire

Full fire retardant coveralls, welding boots with leather lace cover and in date safety harness, that’s about as hse as I get, it still stands thou welding on a simulator and welding massively out of position in a uncomfortable position on a critical weld is about at far apart as one can get IMO

When I was a youngster, an old hand said to me once...

"You have to learn to grind before you can learn to weld"

So true.

And, paint can make a good job look crap and a bad job look good

Does the chap in the first picture get a certificate at the end of the course or a presentation mug ?

The tie is an important part of how he is awarded the certificate.

On the basis that a bad welder sets things on fire, a better welder knows how to put out fires, and a really good welder knows how far he can weld when he is on fire, they have a 'closest to the knot' form of assessment. Those whose tip is only slightly singed receive the lowest grade.

I don't even grin or grimace. I just focus on the weld and inspect the damage after Comes with the territory of welding corroded aluminium overhead whilst lying down under it.
