Am assuming that one of the axis has to be level with the handle when the valve is closed?

I am not sure there is much difference in valve height between open and closed. What is it, maybe half a turn of the valve between open and closed? The thread on the valve is quite fine, so the up-and-down movement of the valve stem would be minimal.
The clock position of the UJ might be important - having the spider at 45 degrees to the pivot line might not be the best.
