Ultra Violet/Cataracts.

My wife has worn contact lenses since she was 16, she was blind as a bat, when they did her cataracts at age 70 they corrected her eyesight with the replacement lens. She now just needs glasses for reading. The opp took about 20 minutes, completely painless, then she had to sit down until the swelling had gone down so she could start to open her eye. We walked out to the hospital & she cried I can read that road sign down the road, the effect is that dramatic. So much so, that she was looking forward to the other eye being done.

I will not let swmbo get her eyes sorted, just because she will then see how fugly I really am

Thanks TechnicAl; I hadn't visited the surgery for twelve years but finally needed to and whilst there the practice nurse checked me over; I must be one of very few to have visited the surgery to be suggested I put some weight on; my BMI whatever that is I think was 19 or 20; the nurse said being so light I was more prone to illness? I've been the same weight since leaving school when I started work down a deep coal mine and I've not stopped working since; I've already cut the grass and just visited the petrol station to fuel the car and buy petrol for my gardening kit; I'm just having a mug of tea then I'll do a lot of strimming; the meadow wildflowers are flattened by our dire climate so I'll flatten them further.

Like your dad julianthegypsy I too eat well but my weight doesn't change; I have a decent sized meal every day but my wife and I never ever buy junk food or have food delivered we use the pressure cooker a lot for veg and avoid harmful food as much as possible. I'm intolerant of dairy so I'm Soya powered and better for it; cows milk is for cows and these days more and more people are realizing dairy products are hurting them. My treat every day is a small bar of 85% Cocoa Moser Roth dark chocolate; I buy this at Aldi and it comes in a flat pack of five 25g bars; dark chocolate is fine for me whilst milk chocolate would see me in hospital.

I note a few comments regarding people having had cataracts removed and being able to see clearly; during the cataract removal is the sight also adjusted too?

I'd better get off my backside and stop being lazy; plenty of work waiting to be done.

Yes it is..........they test your eyes and produce a lens that corrects your eyesight....like a contact lens..........they cut your existing cloudy lens and replace it with the "contact lens".........Im 2 years in now. I need reading glasses but only 1.75x, however I think Im getting ready for 2x......so i carry a 2x lens just in case I need to read very small writing.
You cannot drive for a week after.....a bit ironic really as you can see better than you could before

Nice one Bullet2012; a chum at work many years ago once told me I wasn't the ugliest guy he'd ever seen but surely one of the ugliest two; sadly he passed away but we enjoyed many laughs.

Thanks for the information TechnicAl; so not only have cararacts removed but end up with perfect eyesight; something I've never had. My wife and I watched a YouTube video where the guy was discussing eyesight; he had worn glasses all his life and had a friend who had corrective eye surgery telling him how brilliant it was to have pefect vision; this guy though doesn't want to go the same route his explanation he is so used to wearing glasses the glasses have saved him from eye damage a number of times so he would have to wear goggles for protection and end up forgetting to put the goggles on; I actually understand what he means.

My eBay brazing goggles arrived this morning so I'm keen to try them out but yesterday I also bought a more expensive pair from here;

The actual cost is around £17 for these with postage but well worth it for peace of mind. On one of their websites I noticed "Ask an expert" so having started this I'll follow through and find out their recommendations.

As an apprentice mechanical engineer with The National Coal Board back in 1963 starting aged 15 when I reached 16 I was sent to Crigglestone Colliery Training Center on a six month course this including arc and oxy/acetylene welding; arc welding of course needed the very dark lens but for gas welding and brazing we wore lighter goggles; back at the pit the engineers too wore goggles for brazing. I've done very little brazing since but I've seen many YouTube videos where brazing is being carried out without eye protection. Safety was paramount at the NCB and still sticks with me keeping me safe.

Following Hood's excellent advice I bought an Optrel Crystal 2.0 welding helmet which I use for tig and arc; it's brilliant and although rather costly it made a huge difference whilst learning tig; I could now see the weld unlike using my much cheaper auto helmet I'd used for arc welding. I want to play safe for a long time yet.

Funny thing that, when I was going down to hospital for my cancer op I was following a car into the car park and he sat at the barrier for a good 2 minutes just staring. I said to my wife I'll go and see what the problem is. I walked down and pressed the button for the ticket to pass it to him and he went into a panic saying he hadn't paid yet. I explained the procedure to him how you take the ticket with you and put it in the machine on exit to tell you how much you owe. He replied, I'll be a while I've come to get my cataracts done, he was on his own in the car with no specs on obviously blind as a bat. The barrier was up and we followed him into the car park and my missus said give him plenty of room.

They are amongst us pedrobedro; it's surprising how many we get behind who are doing 20mph in a 50mph limit; it must be a huge desision to make to surrender a driving licence.

Thanks again everyone for your interesting replies which I much appreciate. I'm still unsure regarding ultra violet/cataracts but I'm now fully sorted; the second pair of brazing goggles arrived this morning. Yesterday and this morning I did the brazing job wearing the cheaper eBay brazing goggles and they are actually very good; I'll play safe and always wear goggles whilst brazing. I thought the goggles at shade #5 might be a bit too dark but I'm happy with them and could see what I was doing. Here's the brazing job now done for interest.

Machining a tool land on the lathe with milling cutter chucked. I did the first batch of twenty using hacksaw and files.

My way of avoiding a dry joint; three light center pops to throw up a burr;

Brazing in progress; note "third hand" holding tip gently in position and tool angled for easy access always fully heating to cherry red from below.. eBay goggles shown; I like them.

Close up; I added extra braze to each side ensuring a strong joint.

All 20 fully brazed and have been fettled ready to take over to my friend tomorrow. Nothing special just a nice interesting job to keep my hand in.

Next project is induction heating because it interests me and something new to play with.
